Re: Jessica Chastain the next big star?

There's something about Chastain that turns me off. I don't know what it is, but whenever I see her I feel repulsed.

So he IS male.

I kinda hope she doesn't become a "big star." Because that often means roles in fluffy romantic comedies and action movies. That stuff is fine on occasion, but I hope she at least goes the way of Julianne Moore and does some independent films in addition to the mainstream fare.

Re: Jessica Chastain the next big star?

I see her as more of a female Mark Ruffalo crossed with a mid-90s era female Gary Sinise, with just a sprinkle of vintage female Peter O'Toole on top.

Re: Jessica Chastain the next big star?

I think she'll have a very good career since she is a great actor, isn't just about her looks. I have liked her in everything I have seen her in (Take Shelter, The Debt, Tree of Life) and thought she actually gave the best performance in The Help. So here's hoping that she doesn't fade away.

Also, after looking up her...work in Jolene, I'll have to check it out. Sexy ginger!

Re: Jessica Chastain the next big star?

I know she's been popping up in a ton of films lately but I've seemed to miss everything she's in.

Every time I see her in a ad or trailer I think it's Christina Hendricks and I wonder where her tits went.

Never heard of her, but she's not bad to look at. But I don't think she'll be a big star. She just doesn't have the right look to be successful.

Re: Jessica Chastain the next big star?

Well, she was "wuz" robbed at the Spirit Awards, not winning for "Take Shelter." Losing to the actress who played Clooney's older daughter in "The Descendants."

Re: Jessica Chastain the next big star?

That's okay with me. That girl's performance in The Descendants was probably the only noteworthy thing about the movie.

Re: Jessica Chastain the next big star?

Seeing all the praise for 'Jolene' in this thread since I last posted, I thought I would clarify that a little.

'Jolene' is not a good film, not by a long shot. It would fit right in as some 'Lifetime Movie of the Week'.

But... Chastain gives a good performance in it. It's worth seeing for her performance, not for the film.

But she does a lot of nudity in that film so that makes up for it

A stunner at the Oscars

Re: Jessica Chastain the next big star?

I thought it was interesting that both her roles in Take Shelter and Tree of Life were pretty similar. She played wives that were in direct conflict of their beliefs with their husband. Take Shelter because of his hallucinations and behavior. In Tree of Life it was because of how she chose to raise the kids. And as similar as the characters were, she played them both totally differently.

I did rent Jolene and, on the advice of this thread, fast-forwarded through it. Obviously I can't judge the quality of the film, but on the other fronts it delivered.

Jessica Chastain

I just saw a Most Violent Year, which I thought was OK, but nothing spectacular.

It was also yet another movie that I felt Jessica Chastain was completely average in.

She gets so many accolades but I do not see it. Not really a bad actress, but there is just this complete lack of engagement for me with any of her characters. I don't ever really feel like her characters are real, they always feel sort of dull and plastic, and I never really am able to forget that I am watching an "actress".

I thought she was a very weak link in Most Violent Year, unconvincing and dull in Interstellar and flat in Zero Dark Thirty.

Just do not see why people rave about her.

Re: Jessica Chastain

Though she's been a working actress for years, it felt like she showed up out of nowhere in 2011 and was suddenly being hailed as the next Meryl Streep. I kind of wanted to dislike her, but she comes off as so humble and sweet in interviews that she won me over... and I honestly though she was the best part of Interstellar and Zero Dark Thirty. Not groundbreaking performances, but solid work. Granted, I haven't seen anything else she's done (apart from a guest appearance on 'Veronica Mars').

Supermallet doesn't like her either, so you're in good company . I personally like her in what I've seen her in, she was feral and icy as the obsessive central character. Thought she was good in Lawless, though she didn't get much to do beyond be the pretty girl love interest. Thought she was excellent as the bitter scientist who's abandoned in Interstellar. Just me though .

This. It was the year off Chastain and Fassbender.

I've seen almost every movie shes been in since 2008. I personally think she is fantastic.

I agree, IMO her best performance was in Take Shelter, she was actually good in that.
