Die Hard - One of my favorite actions films of all time
Die Hard 2 - Guilty pleasure
Die Hard 3 - Meh
Die Hard 4 - Fucking terrible. Felt like a generic action movie where JM is almost superhuman.
I have no faith in Die Hard 5 being any good based on the hiring of that hack screenwriter whose whole resume is shit. They should have never made any sequels to the first film.

Cut to 2007, and every action hero is a sensitive "real man", so I was greatly amused to see that the new Die Hard was a revival of silly, over-the-top '80s action. I don't think McClane via Jason Bourne would have been nearly as entertaining. As I've mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I really wish it was rated R, but I still find that it's a fun movie.

For the worst example, check out Justin Long after the power plant explodes and he's standing back near the van. They try to cut away to a long-distance shot where he's out of focus, but whatever he's saying, he's saying with his whole body, basically, and you can tell the "HUH!?" on the audio isn't at all what he was doing on set.

But be wary with the scene of Willis taking over the radio to Olyphant towards the end. In the commentary Wiseman mentions that while shooting that scene they had no lines for Willis so he just said random crap. They ADRed the real dialog in post. So there's no way to fix that scene beyond a reshoot.

wasn't a huge fan of the last one. it was a good action flick, but just seemed so generic and didn't really fit in w/ the other Die Hard movies. Having said that, I'd go see a 5th one. Hopefully they are smart and make it an R like the 1st three movies were.

Keep em coming as far as I'm concerned. I hope they don't go with an international storyline, where he's saving the entire world or something. Just return it to an enclosed location, set it at Christmas, throw in a few cameos and we're good to go.

I'm just glad they're not trying to "reboot" the damn franchise. Seeing a sequel is almost refreshing these days.

To me Die Hard 4 worked because it dropped the 'wrong place at the wrong time', just a normal guy routine.
After the events in DH 1-3 McClain pretty much knows that he is just a badass, so he pretty much gave up the 'how can this keep happening to me?' and excepts that he'll just kick these guys ass just like he had done the in the previous movies.
Besides Die Hard, DH4 is my favorite.

They should set DH 5 at his daughter's wedding in a big building at Christmas in L.A. with Powell as an usher who's also packing. Turn it into a hostage situation with Olyphant's cousin/brother/step-mother wanting revenge against him. It could work....:-) Until then...enjoy:

As I view this thread in the forum, it is right under the thread for the 5th Fast and Furious movie, and it made me think... why not combine the two franchises?
Bruce Willis meets Vin Diesel.
Die Fast, Die Furious, Die Hard
or
The Fast and the Furious Die Hard
I'd buy tickets to that.

I love the Die Hard movies. I'm all for a 5th entry in the series.
Die Hard - One of the greatest action movies of all time. An absolute classic and the measuring stick by which all modern action movies (non sci-fi) are judged.
Die Hard 2 - Almost as good as the first. It's a bit of a rehash, but so what? It's fun, it's got great action, and it's got John McClane. And it's got Django!
Die Hard With A Vengeance - Good. Very good. It does feel off, and McClane's descent into the bottle at the beginning of the movie isn't consistent with the character we saw in the first two movies. The Lethal Weapon buddy cop type movie (and it was written as a Lethal Weapon movie, was it not?) works OK, but that's the other big non-Die Hard aspect of the movie that keeps this one from being as good as the first two.
Live Free Or Die Hard - Better than the last one, but not as good as the first two. Is John McClane superhuman in this one? Hardly. He gets the hell beat out of him (again). But he is more confident than in the previous movies because he is older, wiser, and knows that he's done this kind of thing before. Experience makes him more confident. McClane couldn't be exactly the same as in the first two movies because he's older and has the, "Been there, done that," factor that he couldn't have previously.
#5 ?? Bring it on!
