what 'action'?

Movie was terrible. Very disappointing, considering the talent within.

I rented the Unrated cut on BD from my local video store and watched about 90 minutes of the 137 minutes, but had no idea what the hell I was watching. So I stopped it and didn't want to waste anymore time.

I have trouble believing that someone would do this...you still have a local video store???? Stopping the movie, yeah, I believe that.

That's a good way to put it. And I think that's why so many people were turned off by it.

It's a devastating story. Told in a downplayed, ho-hum manner.

We're conditioned to seeing the protagonist get backed into a corner, and then figure his way out. Because that's what every movie does. In The Counselor, the 'good guys' are backed into a corner, and then come to realize that there is no way out.

It's how I see "Big Crime". The lesson is that you don't associate with a Cartel or Mob. In escapism crime movies, the good guy is going to find his way out. He's going to end up on a beach somewhere. Or load up with guns and walk into the bad guy's mansion. In real life, or in The Counselor, he's going to be just another guy who disappeared. Just another dead suburbanite. 'An altercation occurred...', you get a blurb on the morning news. It's devastating to the people involved. But society doesn't care.

It's an interesting concept. I'm interested in seeing more movies like it.

I like the concept. I'd like to see a good movie about it.

No Country For Old Men
The Bad Sleep Well, not exactly but in a way fits what Troy is describing.

Huh? I don't get your 1st point. Yes, I still have a local video store. They aren't completely dead in the LA area. I rented the Unrated Cut for $2.

Re: The Counselor -- D: Ridley Scott -- screenplay by Cormac McCarthy -- 2013

Having slept on this movie, I'd like to upgrade my opinion of it to "I liked it". I felt that immediately after watching it that I couldn't express that because of how damn depressing it was.

I agree with your take, Troy.

It was nuts that something so mundane as getting a random client's out of a speeding ticket would snowball like that. But there it was.

I'm pretty sure most people's opinion of Brad Pitt has changed for the better in recent years, but if you hate him, watch this movie. Haha.

Diaz is the devil.

Fell asleep watching it, but only because I was shitfaced. I will give it another shot. It wasn't bad, but the scene with Diaz rubbing her nasty flaps on Anton Sigurh's windshield kinda made me feel sick.

I was being sarcastic as they have all but vanished through most of America.

The film had a few moments, but overall just boring. Didn't hate it, didn't like it. The actors did the best they could with the script. Very forgettable.

A hot steaming pile of 100% pure grade A shit. Stand out parts for me were:

The bolito scene

The motorcycle decapitation scene

Motorcycle guy explaining to the lady in line why dog food is a great diet for humans

Oh and WTF @ Dean Norris and John Leguizamo being in this movie for all of 5 seconds?

Re: The Counselor -- D: Ridley Scott -- screenplay by Cormac McCarthy -- 2013

I finally got round to watching this last night. Its a strange movie. Its not outright awful, but it just meanders and doesn't really go anywhere with a bunch of characters that you never really find out much about and don't give a shit for. It looks nice and the acting is fine, but the story is severely lacking. I don't get the motivations of anyone beyond simple greed. The scene with Diaz on the car was not as bad as i expected, but can someone pinpoint the exact time when she went from being attractive to looking like a drag queen. She is seriously ugly material these days and this movie highlights it. The surgery she has had does not help, even fixing that nose. Her character in this movie is just awful and i kept wanting her to meet a grisly end.

The one highlight was seeing
Spoiler:
Brad Pitt getting that head wire cutter put on and it cutting the jugular and a few fingers in the process.

Every single thing you wrote sums up my exact feelings to a tee. Well said. Not sure WTF's happened to Diaz.

Re: The Counselor -- D: Ridley Scott -- screenplay by Cormac McCarthy -- 2013

I finally got around to watching this over the weekend (theatrical cut premiered on HBO). I had low expectations going into it and ended up actually liking it (I think). I would like to revisit it by watching the extended cut (which I understand Scott is a strong advocate of).

FWIW, I too was a big fan of Killing Them Softly. This movie has some similarities, though not as good overall.

I would say that was Cormack McCarthy's mission statement for the entire movie. He wrote the script without giving a single fuck as to how movies (or even stories) work. Like it or hate it, it just doesn't conform at all to standard story-telling procedures that have been part of humanity since we first started telling stories in caves, and around fires. We seem to have these story-beats programed into our DNA, so when something is just a little off, we notice it and think the story's "slow" or "pointless", when really, it's really just trowing our perceptions off kilter. I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing, just something that fucks with our head a little, much more than the typical big budget movie does.

Just finished watching it and I am in shock. As someone who hates Ridley Scott ,I loved it. BTW I also also loved Killing Them Softly & Only God Forgives.

That was definitely a scene that could have been cut.

Cameron Diaz indeed looked hideous.

I bought the Blu-ray for $5. It's got some good moments in it but it's not a good movie. Great cast even for the small roles but it's bleak as all hell. Colorfully bleak, I should say.

Yeah, mine hasn't shipped yet...still considering canceling it, lol. Haven't seen it in Redbox for quite a while, otherwise I'd go that route.
