Hmm, I was unaware of this hidden image at the end, but even if it had been obvious, it would not have changed my disappointment in The Inkeepers.

The movie flat out failed for me. Like everyone else I thought the lead girl was fantastic, I hope to see her in another movie soon. I liked all the early stuff, the build up, but felt let down by the tepid ending. I would have been fine with no explanation, this just being a story of creepy and terrible things like the Ju-on movies, but I didn't think the "full force" at the end went anywhere near as far to be satisfying. Something more had to happen for me than that little scene in the basement.

Good location, good actors, creepy stuff, but the movie was just too laid back it felt like a big chunk of story was missing.

Totally agree. I thought House of the Devil did an excellent job of a slow build followed by the right amount of payoff at the end. This movie felt like 99% build-up with little to nothing to show for it at the end. I was surprised when it was over... I was still waiting for something to happen.

Yeah, that's how I feel about Innkeepers. I'm definitely a fan of Ti West, and will check out what he does in the future, but while I was on the edge of my seat with House of the Devil, Innkeepers bored me. I did like the lead and her friend, and I was mildly interested in their lives, but this movie just never got its hooks in me.

I think that the disappointment for me was that I loved 90% of the movie, so I was looking forward to seeing how it wrapped up. Then than last 10%... its like West didn't know how to wrap it up so he just ramped it up instead.

Re: THE INNKEEPERS (2011) (dir. Ti West) (Sara Paxton, Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis)

Just watched this again last night on blu
Spoiler:
And I think that ending is awesome. Now that you know what to look for you will see it plain as day. It takes a minute or so for her to show and she actually turns and looks at ya right before the door closes - it works great.

Ending aside....as for the movie as a whole...I like it better than HOTD - I know I'm in the minority on this one but I just really dig Sara Paxton's nerdiness and the setup alone
Spoiler:
the husband coming back to join his lover by killing himself where they met

And yes, I'm well aware that there are a few things that don't make sense but it doesn't bother me.

This movie sucks

Having a nerdy guy who loves surfing porn
A weird washout actress
A lead whose nature is ??? Really Asthma? Asthma?

Anyhows, probably this thread got resurrected because its going on for $4.99 at Bestbuy via Upgrade and Save

I didn't know about that ending either. I liked it for what it was but I think it would have been even more enjoyable if I would have caught it the first time. I like most thought the door just slammed for a final jump scare.

Trust me...It's worth watching again (well, if you're not a fan of it like me who can watch it multiple times) just to see it...I just thought it was clever and something different.

I'm sorry this movie only came in one version xage. Obviously if there were 10 different retailer exclusives, the movie would've been AWESOME!

Re: THE INNKEEPERS (2011) (dir. Ti West) (Sara Paxton, Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis)

I watched this last night and flat out loved the shit out of it.

West is more or less my go-to guy for new horror now. I absolutely love his attention to building a tense atmosphere, populating his films with characters who feel like they exist in the real world. West doesn't go for cheap scares, which he could have EASILY done a thousand times here, eschewing loud noises and gore gags for straight up "if I were in this situation my pants would be crapped" terror.

Paxton was - as we all clearly agree - adorable as hell. She portrayed her character with just the rights hints of vulnerability and excitement. I found her reactions to be legit, although I don't think 99% of girls would have EVER gone into that basement.

Pat Healy was great as Luke. Shit, aside from some very clear differences the guy reminded me of myself a lot; mostly just in his dialogue. I loved how the tables turned from him being the instigator of paranormal activity to her. The scene with the two of them in the basement room was chillingly good.

West maintains my constant interest because he presents just enough to keep viewers intrigued, but he's also wise to play it close to the vest (some would say too close) and not reveal every little thing about every little thing.

I scrutinized the final shot as it was ending because I expected to see something there. Guess I didn't look hard enough because I missed her. I was half expecting him to end it the way Luke fooled Claire earlier, with some crazy demon face jumping into the frame.

Agree with all of your comment. I thought it was terrific. I hope Ti West stays with the slow burn horror approach, even if it will never have wide appeal for the cineplex crowd.

Also, still can't see the "surprise" in the final scene, even after looking for it multiple times.

Re: THE INNKEEPERS (2011) (dir. Ti West) (Sara Paxton, Pat Healy, Kelly McGillis)

I loved The Innkeepers.

While I enjoyed the painstaking labor put into making House of the Devil appear to be made in 1980, overall the movie was a bit bland for me. I was in the camp of it being not much happening until the finale. The mood was done right but there wasn't much in the story.

The Innkeepers really has the same problem of nothing happening as the mood slowly creeps upward, but that's saved by Sarah Paxton's > ADORABLE performance. It's so much fun hanging out with her that we don't mind that nothing's happening. I thought she perfectly paired the mood, and also balanced light humour with the tension.

I finally saw it after a couple attempts. Look up and to the left of the heater, right between the curtain and the window. It's faint but, as others have pointed out, much like a Magic Eye picture once you see it, you see it every time.

With a theatrical release in 2012. So it counts.

Anyone love the Easter Egg in the end of the movie?

This was OK. I'll be honest, I did not like Sara Paxton. I found her annoying. She was too plucky, if that makes any sense. There were some decent scares and I found the atmosphere creepy.

I watched this last night and thought it was terrible. I found the scares to be predictable, cheap, and few and far between. I don't know who the hell approved that flawed ending, but it wasn't a good look. Kudos for the Lena Dunham bit part, if nothing else.
