The 3D announcement only bothers me that studios are annoying. It does nothing to temper my excitement or expectations for the film and I'll be saving a few dollars on that upcharge since I'll see it in 2D either way.

Looks like del Toro is getting some serious backing and support from the studio, therefore, he's changed his mind about converting the film to 3-D.
“What happened was, in the weeks and months following Comic-Con, what I asked from the studio was to agree to four points that I wanted to do. The more the ILM shots arrived, the more I realized that there were only a few shots that would miniaturize.
I asked the studio, number one, that we would not hyper-stereo-lize the thing. That we would not force 3D on the beauty shots. That we would keep the giant dimensions. They agreed. Number two, they agreed to something very unusual. Normally a conversion takes a few weeks. I asked to start it immediately so we could take the full 40 weeks to do the conversion. As an example, Titanic took about 50 weeks to convert.
The final thing that I asked that they agreed to, which was amazing, was that I asked them to give me an extra budget, which is considerable, to actually have ILM composite the shots that are CG native 3D. We're not giving elements. ILM is giving the composite in 3D from the get-go. That's a huge, huge element. Now I'm going to be involved in supervising it. What can I tell you? I changed my mind. I'm not running for office. I can do a Romney.”

I'm down with that since del Toro is still in control. Whatever it takes.

Ditto, but it is nice to hear they're taking ample time to try doing it right.
Wait, is this thing going to be in IMAX? If so, then those screenings will almost certainly be 3D only.

Changes my tune. I'll most likely watch it in 2D but...if I hear good shit about it? Sure I'll go queer.

I didn't know I had to go queer to see a movie in 3-D. I've seen plenty of 3-D movies and have stayed perfectly straight.

If WB gets their wish, the 2D version will be the queer release.

I'm normally against 3D conversion, but if they are taking the time to do it right and create new FX specifically for it, then I might give it a shot.

The part where the studio made him do it. Duh. He didn't film it in 3D. It's being converted to 3D now. With that conversion comes the rather healthy timetable that the studio has allowed for it. Also..fixing the effects to fit in 3D.
In other words? A proper conversion. They're giving him good control of it so far. If it was forced on him and he had no input? I'd be pissed cuz that fucks it all up. But..they're letting him on that team too. Yes. He didn't want 3D but...they're letting him work on the 3D. And he seems pretty happy w/ that.
I've yet to see a conversion that was good. I never saw Titanic...I hear that was pretty damn good. Soooooo that's the only 3D conversion I've read that's pretty damn good. Otherwise...all 3D conversion is shit...again..from what I've read.

The conversion for The Avengers was solid, unnecessary as it was.
If this gets good marks, maybe I'll see the 3D. I do trust GDT to do it right.

The think that gets me trusting of it is that they're actually allowing them the time to do it. I hope it works out.
