Re: Indonesian action flick "The Raid" (2012) getting rave reviews
Haven't seen this yet, so I'm trying to avoid spoilers but...how violent is this movie? I love action flicks, and I do like violence in movies--I just don't like the ultra-intense, slit a throat and watch the head and spinal cord come out the trachea kind of violence.
Is it significantly worse than The Expendables (which to me was pretty crazy)...? Will I throw up into my popcorn bag?

It's a combination of Die Hard, Hard Boiled (hospital sequence), Time and Tide (apartment complex sequence), and Ong Bak.

Glad to hear they are increasing the screens for this one. It's even going to play in my neck of the woods (a smaller city in Canada) next week. I can't wait.

Saw this last night with a few buddies and enjoyed it quite a bit. It's not perfect; I felt it was a bit slow in some areas, character names were almost unidentifiable (I really don't know the name of the lead guy) and the ending was somewhat lackluster (the resolution with the old man seemed terribly poor), but the action is fantastic. My favorite aspect about it is how tense all the action was; the first half is a blood bath, and given how brutal the majority of the attacks are I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next, whether to the lead guy or any of the other cops. Just fantastic, especially in the scene where
I disagree that this suffered from the cliche of bad guys attacking one at a time. There were plenty of times where multiple guys were being fended off at once, and coupled with the cramped hallways it made sense when it did.
I thought the action in the middle of the movie was better then the final fight though. I don't think it went on too long, just that it wasn't as interesting.

It's also weird that the posters mention 30 floors. Don't they only go up to the 15th?

I am not a huge fan of recent action films, and I thought this one was fucking great!
Definite Carpenter vibe to the new soundtrack, and a big nod to Assault on Precinct 13 with the way the bad guys looked. I also dug the Warriors homage with the shot of the guy and the microphone early on.
I couldn't help but feel like some of the stunt people really got fucked up filming this. They credited over a dozen on set medics and doctors. Some of those landings with bodies hitting ledges with their backs, if that wasn't CGI, then dudes got tore up.

Interesting read on where the US action film went, that really ultimately doesn't mean much to me personally..but it's interesting at least.

Didn't see the film last week like I planned.
Going to try to get out to a showing this week.

Now that is how action films should be. Fast, furious, and electric. I couldn't believe some of the stuff I was seeing on screen. The choreography must have taken them months and months.

Some of the dudes on various kung-fu boards were complaining of the film being re-scored by Shinoda (sp ??). While not an overly huge Linkin Park fan, the soundtrack was fantastic. It really drew you into the action.
I'm really considering going to see if again one more time on the big screen.

Hey, another Utahn!
For some reason I just thought this was only coming to the arthouses, but as it turns out it's actually coming to several of the bigger theaters around here - is the American release dubbed?

The way it should be.
Question on the subtitles: Has anyone bitched on mistranslations or akin to that. Not that this film had much but still...it seemed accurate in relation to what I was looking at.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this - the last few weeks have been really stressful, and this looks like just the kind of film I'd enjoy right now.
