I'm not trying to promote or anything, but a friend of ours covered the film at SXSW this past week and here's his review:
Mods, let me know if I can or cannot post stuff like this in the future. Not trying to plug or anything.

And yes, Shinoda did rescore the the film, but according to sources it's very much a "John Carpenter" influenced score. I'm thinking Assault on Precinct 13 on acid. And I'm not even a Lincoln Park fan.

According to IMDB, this movie was made for $1.1 million.
That wouldn't cover the catering for "John Carter".

The more I see of this film, the less I get interested. It's not supposed to be like that, right?
I feel like I'm watching the same scene over and over. Same rhythm, location, moves, camera positions, cutting on impact...and like someone said above, there's no story here. It's a situation.
Anyone here seen the film? Is it really just a series of interchangeable fight scenes? Does anyone in it have a personality? Any clever dialogue? Is it playfully absurd, or a total grind?

I saw it tonight in Perth.
I WILL be seeing it again. and again.
All of the action is top-notch. It's definitely not "non-stop" action, though. There are more than a few scenes that give the viewers some time to breathe.
Gareth Evans did a fantastic job, especially with the fight sequences. He knows exactly where the camera needs to be.

and apparently spoils the ending (or at least described it) Also he seems to take offence that many big name critics actually liked/loved the film, and also complains about the fact that its called "the Raid Redemption" Who, or what, is redeemed? How? Why?

From Ebert's review:
""The Raid: Redemption" is essentially a visualized video game that spares the audience the inconvenience of playing it."
This is what I was afraid of. I'm as much of a fan of crazy violence as the next guy, and can take totally gratuitous violence as part of an overall film, but when a film is nothing but that..........

Guys....I don't know wtf you thought it was but...the plot is a swat team attempting to go in a building and fight their way up to the 30th floor to take down the crime lord. I'm not seeing how it's not that yet. We all knew it was that. How much more plot does one need w/ a very objective based plot like that?
I assume it's all that and an action orgasm or two on my part.

Anyone who calls this an action classic on the level of Die Hard (like that guy over on AICN) is a mouth breathing moron.

Just watched the trailer, this looks like it could be the best action movie since Die Hard!

Who knew all it took was extreme violence to get rave reviews from critics. Other than the ridiculously, over the top violence, I'm not seeing much here to rave about.
Also, this film has no business being mentioned alongside Die Hard.

DIE HARD
THE RAID
Obviously, just as good as Die Hard! Of course for the sticklers out there, if you use the new full title name:
THE RAID: REDEMPTION
translates to
DIE HARD HARDBOILED
The addition to the title now makes it as good as Die Hard and Hard Boiled combined!
Besides the above silliness, saw "The Raid" today - liked it alot for what is was made to be (went for a frantic action movie, and got myself a frantic action movie). Did the director ever say the Mad Dog in this movie was a deliberate homage to the Hardboiled one?

Hopefully they'll destroy all copies of Die Hard because with the Raid, that old Die Hard movie is obsolete and unnecessary. It's silly for both films to exist.

It's just dissapointing that no one seems to care about quality of craft anymore. I guess things like expressive lighting and shot construction, actual camera setups, rhythmic editing that is logical and not just a bunch of random coverage thrown together are things of the past. Why bother carefully constucting a 3-act movie that flows and has a dramatic through-line when you can just throw a bunch of shit and noise together and people can't tell the difference?

Just got home from seeing this. It was FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!!! Best action film in the last 10 years easy. Seriously, me and most people in the theater were sweating in our seats. Literally!
If you can find it in your are then by all means watch it. Spread the word! I hear that there are two more films planned in the series.

Didn't realize this was out. Oops!
Looks like I'll have to drive out to San Francisco, since no theaters in my area are showing it

also...what could we agree on w/ the best action films in since 2000? Cuz...i'd go with...
A-Team
Crank 2
Punisher: War Zone
UniSol: Regeneration
Rambo
Terminator Salvation
Sha Po Lang
Flash Point
which...actually makes me sad. Cuz some of those are pretty fucking uneven...
