Actually, it was a pretty great movie. Better than Thor, better than Iron Man 2, pretty much as good as Iron Man and X-Men: First Class. Even the 3D was pretty good too. While there were a few things I would have fixed and tightened up -- the epilogue was particularly clunky -- this was superlative summer entertainment.
While I won't go out on a limb to say Johnston is a great director (he's not), he's made some decent films IMO. I actually forgot he directed "The Rocketeer". And while watching "C.A.", it reminded me a lot of "The Rocketeer" and "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow". Production-wise. And I know I'm in the minority here, but I loved "The Wolfman".

I can't believe I'm suggesting they take a page from directing handbook of Albert Pyun but it'd be neat if she played her character's niece as well.

Really had a good time with this one. Didn't see any of the other comic book films yet this summer, and despite thinking Johnston is a pretty subpar director and never having read Capt comics, this is the one I pegged out as the flick I wanted to see.

Evans nailed it, the tone was perfect and there was enough action for my liking. The Brooklyn car chase was great. The Red Skull effect was a little uneven and I wonder if they toned it down to make it more cartoonish to keep it from getting too disturbing. Especially with the inspired early shot of the gory red paint, I was hoping it would have been a little bit less plastic.

Also, the propellor death was unexpected but kinda great.

In addition, I witnessed one of the funniest audience reactions I can remember. At the moment when Toby Jones reluctantly throws his fists up and proclaims "Hail Hydra" many in my audience did an audible "awwwww" as if being coerced to follow Red Skull instead of remaining true to Hitler was really any worse.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Very enjoyable, although I think I liked Thor better this year. This lagged a bit more for me, and the action wasn't as interesting. The odd cuts in some areas and deliberately not showing certain scenes I expected to see kind of made things awkward for me with the way the movie flowed.

Still, great casting and like the other Marvel movies, a nice sense of humor added on. I'm very impressed that they made Red Skull not look ridiculous, along with Cap in the uniform and in action with the shield. I was hoping for maybe a better definitive action scene with Cap fighting and tossing his shield to really wow everyone, but I don't feel that ever came. I liked that Cap and Peggy's relationship never really got going and ended up particularly mushy. It made their conversation and the end sweeter to me. As for a sequel:

Spoiler:
I was thinking the same thing about Atwell playing Sharon Carter in a sequel; I think it would work out very well. And I really hope they go the Winter Soldier route. It would work really well in the context of the movies.

Also, what was the Human Torch cameo? I didn't notice anything.

I'm most impressed that all of these Marvel movies have been solid. Iron Man, Thor, and Cap were all very good, and i'd put Iron Man 2 and Hulk a notch below but still entertaining. I'm not sure what Marvel would have done if one of these bombed before the Avengers. I've never seen a theater so full through the entire end credits to watch the teaser.

I don't know what the comic explanation was, but in the film Dr. Erskine explained that the serum amplifies what the person already had inside them -- implying that Schmitt's evil traits somehow manifested themselves in his physical appearance.

The Human Torch cameo was the guy in the glass tube at the Stark Expo; had a red jumpsuit on.

I really enjoyed the movie, Loved the look of it. I thought the VFX (though Red Skull looked alittle blah) and the cast was great too. Way better then I was expecting. Loved the Avengers Teaser at the end. Movie looks badass.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

Regarding the epilogue:

Spoiler:
Anybody else think the agent who comes into the fake 1940s recovery room is going to be Sharon Carter (Peggy's niece and Capt's future love interest)? Casting Amanda Righetti (who looks very similar to Hayley Atwell) seems like they were setting her up for the sequel.

Regarding a sequel:

Spoiler:
I thought they were going to leave some sort of grey area in the movie in the 1940s timeline so that future sequels could take place in the past for Capt's "other adventures". The timeline of events didn't really leave any gaps between where Captain America actively begins service and when he is frozen. Unless they make a movie that goes into more depth about the montage where he destroys the HYDRA bases. However, that seems very anti-climactic since it covers material we've essentially seen.

I think any sequel will take place in the modern world.

Didn't Marvel mention that a sequel would have some WW2 moments?

As flashbacks probably.

Especially if they do the Winter Soldier storyline.

This movie was a lot like 'First Class' in that it dwelled on uninteresting things and rushed over some more important things IMHO. First class moreso than Cap America.

It's bad to feel unfulfilled but not enough to sink the whole movie. I still keep yearning for more of my favorite scenes in movies like these.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

I really enjoyed it. Lots of time on character on little on action but that really didn't bother me that much. I'll take character development over special effects any day if it is interesting.

My only disappointment was that
Spoiler:
the movie spends 97% of the time in WWII. I know that that is the purpose to get it started but I really always found Cap a more interesting character when he was trying to adjust to modern society, getting over everyone he knew being dead or old, etc. I know that is prime real estate for a sequel but all that good drama may get forgotten with The Avengers coming out next year.

The Avengers looks awesome by the way.

My 7 year old has seen every super-hero movie with me this summer and his favorite remains Green Lantern followed by X-men First Class. Mine's a toss-up between Thor and Cap. I think I like Cap a little better but that may be because I read him more as a kid and always hoped for a quality movie for him.

All in all, this summer has made a retired comic reader very happy.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

They could essentially do a similar film for The Winter Soldier.

If I am remembering right . . .

Spoiler:
The Soviets had him and used him as an assassin over the years. They'd wake him up from some kind of cryo-sleep tube or something for a mission every 5-10 years. Somehow an ever youthful Black Widow was involved too, but I don't know if that would work with our movie Black Widow. But I guess it could. Why not? we have Hulk, a Norse God, a Super Soldier all in the Iron Man universe now.

Spoiler:
I didn't like that Bucky "died" and that the timeline of events does not bode well for more WWII sequels and possibly the introduction of The Invaders.

Overall, I thought it was a good film, but I'd put Thor just slightly ahead of it.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger (Johnston, 2011) — The Reviews Thread

I left thinking it was alright but nothing special. The action was by the book, Evans was serviceable as CA but not nearly the impact compared Hensworth as Thor (I won't even bring up Downey Jr. or Fassbender) and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, despite his appearance never convinced me he was a viable threat.

I guess where the movie excels is with the costume and production designs and it did manage to entertain me for 2 hours, but otherwise I found this to be a safe movie if not also somewhat forgettable.

Even after seeing it, I can't recall one thing that stood out save for the Avengers teaser.

As soon as Hugo Weaving's character revealed his true identity, I couldn't help thinking he looked like an alternate version of The Mask. Kept expecting him to blow something up and say "Smokin!"...

Ah I had to look that up, I had no idea what the origin was of the original Torch so I wouldn't have known it even if I was looking for it. Found some screenshots as to what you guys are all talking about.

Dang! The movie didn't really convey how much "Va Va Voom" this woman possesses.
