The Gangster Squad (2013, Gosling/Penn, Ruben Fleischer directing)
IMDB says this is in pre-production, so I hope it comes out next year based on the awesome cast. But they have 2013 as the release year.
Short plot synopsis: Based on a series of Los Angeles Times articles, the true story tale follows a secret "off the record" police task force in the 1940s who pursued high-profile gangster Meyer Harris "Mickey" Cohen (Sean Penn), a member of the so-called "Jewish Mafia". Former L.A. cop and novelist Will Beall penned the script.
Cast includes: Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Bryan Cranston, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Michael Pena.
Gosling and Brolin are playing cops.

Emma Stone Eyed for Role Opposite Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn in 'Gangster Squad'

Emma Stone is in early talks to play the female lead in Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow's Gangster Squad, a crime drama set in 1940s Los Angeles.
The project would reteam Stone with her Crazy, Stupid, Love co-star Ryan Gosling, with the actress playing a woman caught between Gosling's good cop and Sean Penn's gangster Mickey Cohen.

I like Brolin's casting as an L.A. cop. He can pull it off. Not Gosling, though. He's all wrong. He's too slight. He should play a bad guy or a stoolie. He's not hero material, in my book. He's fine playing looney characters in indie movies, but don't try to make a mainstream star out of him.

I'm not a fan of Penn, but Mickey Cohen could be a very good role for him as long as he tones his usual schtick down a bit. (If such a thing is possible. Can't they give him sedatives?) Harvey Keitel was very good as Mickey Cohen in Warren Beatty's BUGSY (1991). Keitel had played Bugsy Siegel himself in a TV movie called THE VIRGINIA HILL STORY (1974).

Ugh, the first half was exciting, Sean Penn is chewing it up like Al in Dick Tracy. the rest looks a bit generic/made for TV, all those cheap digital sets and rap music. Brolin and Gosling look like they're playing themselves rather than transforming. We'll see with the reviews. I'd rather just watch The Untouchables.

Looks awful. This is what I gathered from the trailer:
I noticed Ribisi in the trailer but didn't see Bryan Cranston. This looks like a rental at best.

Doesn't look bad, but I'm interested almost entirely based on the cast. The stylization just doesn't work for me with this type of film. I expect the hip-hop is for marketing purposes, as long as it doesn't start during the credits I don't mind the marketing dept hedging their bets - meaning the film isn't good enough to be advertised as a serious film.
