Saw this earlier today. I liked it a lot. It definitely did remind me of the movies I grew up watching.

Love the old Spielberg films as well as the Star Trek remake and Mission Impossible 3 and greatly looked forward to seeing this film. Saw it today and what a letdown. Boring. Stupid. Starts off great but the longer it goes on, the more it sucked.

Finally got to see it tonight, and I loved every single frame of it. But, rather than take up too much space with my thoughts, I will simply refer everyone to notkevinbacon's post, which pretty much sums it up for me. The only additional comment I want to add is that, contrary to what some have said, I thought the creature design was fantastic.
5 stars.

Shocked that the kid's homemade movie that ran during the end-credits was only brought up a couple of times...I know we see some of these scenes being filmed during the main body of the film, but seeing them spliced together to become one of the greatest end-credit sequences of all time is just wonderful. I smiled throughout the end credits, genius idea by Abrams.

I saw this last week and loved it. Fantastic summer movie. It was basically a mix of The Goonies, ET and even a little Cloverfield. The kid characters were really well written and believable. And I thought the monster design was really well done and was quite scary in a few scenes.
It was also really good to see Kyle Chandler in a major feature film post-Friday Night Lights. I hope he continues to get more work whether it's in TV or Film.
I would give this a solid A. Will definitely get the BD when it comes out later this year.

"Douche" and "Douche bag" were definitely around in the 70s...I remember this kind of language on the bus to school. However, I have no idea where JJ got "this is MINT" from...never heard that before - and I grew up in SW Pennsylvania (actually 30 miles from where SUPER 8 was filmed). I think it must have been a West Coast thing that JJ just assumed made it to the East Coast.
