I liked the red band trailer. I'm looking forward to seeing it, hopefully soon.

As far as the comparisons to Blue Valentine, outside of them both not being 'the feel good movies of the year' and more character studies then 'plot' movies, i don't see any real similarity between the 2.

As one critic put it "its the unsexiest movie about sex possibly ever made' sums it up perfectly. If you don't mind the sex stuff, def. give the movie a shot, and i think Fassbender will get an oscar nomination

there's also a great and soulful cover of "New York New York" that Carey Mulligan sings that i hope gets released.
her rendition just made me cringe.

as for the movie this didn't impress me in the slightest, I guess I was going into this with waaaay too much expectation. Sure the two play two messed up individuals, but honestly I thought this was tedious and I honestly didn't care about the characters let the alone the minimal story.

Saw this today (Detroit) and it was interesting. Rypro 525 quoted the critic who said it was the unsexiest movie about sex ever made, and that about sums it up. Fassbender's performance was great and McQueen's direction was spot-on. Don't think it's a movie I would want to see again though.

Saw it this morning at a 10am(!) showing, which was not empty, as I would have expected.

It's a beautifully directed film, and McQueen shows the kind of restraint that would be impossible for, say, Gaspar Noe. Fassbender and Mulligan both have great roles. As some said before, there isn't much plot to the film, as it's a character study.

Indeed it was. And these were characters very tough to watch. The relationship between Fassbender and Mulligan was not only intense, but very bizarre and uncomfortable (the shower scene). No way could this film have earned an R-rating, there was way too much nudity. Speaking of which, Fassbender, DAMN! I feel sorry for his partners. Heh heh.

personal opinion, if this was a weinstein movie, they could have probably talked them into making it an R. I think there are only 2 shots they had issues with
Spoiler:
Brandon pissing where you can also see his dick as well in the shot, and during the 3 way scene, theres a shot where brandon eats the one girl's ass explicitly shown

Yeah, that latter scene was pretty shocking.

Even though it's hidden by a spoiler, it's still funny to see it typed out.

And back to the subject of actors actually pissing...check out that one episode of Oz with Christopher Meloni pissing into a bucket. It's basically an establishing shot of him being in the hole, but apparently that one scene got more complaints than everything else on the show up to that point.

The bucket industry didn't like their products getting pissed in. It was a pretty big controversy, I'm surprised you don't remember it.

Is there any other way!?

With all of the graphic content on that show, THAT scene got the most complaints?

Yeah it was from viewers, or probably people wanting something to complain about.

Anyway I saw this movie tonight, really enjoyed it, and yeah it was sort of draining, but I liked it. There weren't that many people in the theater, probably around 10 people or so.

The film starts in Nashville on 1/20/12 at the local arthouse. I plan to see it.

Strong performance by Fassbender. Thought it was also well directed. This will surely get (or should) a few nominations come Oscar time.

Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

I suppose the following paragraphs contains spoilers, but the film itself should be seen from viscerally experiencing it, as any discussion of the plot doesn't lend itself to the feelings the film evokes from viewing it. It's somewhat similar to "Requiem For A Dream", knowing the plot synopsis has very little impact from actually seeing the film itself.

The title of the film derives from literally the sense of shame that envelops Brandon (Michael Fassbender), who otherwise looks to be a normal, well-groomed, professional man working in New York City, with the means to live alone in an apartment, but has an addiction to sex, in all manners, be it online webcams/chatrooms, in-person trolling in bars and subways, porn, etc.

Actual one-on-one emotional connections with women eludes Brandon. Living on his own, his addiction occupies most of his waking moments, but his carefree sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan) shows up for an open-ended stay, and basically cramps his style to the point where her presence does the same as putting a mirror to Brandon's growing shame as his addiction continues to consume him, to the point of very selfish levels when it comes to feeding his urges with all manners of sexual interludes (quite a few graphic scenes are in the film) at the expense of living in the moment and putting his needs ahead of anything else.

Fassbender's character study of Brandon is very brave and strong work. His needs for sex overwhelms any sense of intimacy he might develop with anyone, including friends or family. It's quite a strong performance of a tortured soul caught in the throes of unbridled need for sexual activity and release. Even running through the streets of NYC and its release of endorphins don't seem to be enough for Brandon's appetite. Heh.

It's NC-17 for good reason, and if you aren't comfortable with the subject matter, you'd be better off avoiding this film, otherwise, it's a compelling look at something that probably goes on with some of your own friends, co-workers, acquaintances, and you just have no idea what goes through their own mindspace, but this film will give you an unflinching look at such addictive traits.

The direction and camerawork and framing in the film heightens the sense loneliness and isolation that Brandon feels at times when he is unable to act upon his urges.

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B.

Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

Somehow I missed posting in this thread.

I loved Shame. It's my second favorite film of 2011 (after Midnight In Paris). McQueen layered in so many unspoken things throughout the film. There's so much to uncover when you read between the lines.

Fassbender owned this film. Mulligan also did a great job. I was really impressed with everything about it. I can't heap enough praise on it, really.
