Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

I posted my own take when the film was first released on disc. http://www.film-matters.net/2012/06/...ick-shame.html

In a nutshell, it doesn't matter what exactly haunts the past of the Fassbender and Mulligan characters. (Although I agree with some of you folks that incest involved.)

The one issue I do have is that their scarred history is so vague that it makes the inevitable conclusion difficult to swallow.

Spoiler:
Mulligan's suicide attempt and Fassbender's willingness to cement an emotional connection only carries so much emotional gravitas.

But even with the obvious flaws, its a film that still permeates in my memory, even after the last month. I should rewatch to re-evaluate. It may just be a masterpiece afterall.

Really wish that CC had handled the BD.

Anyone else felt as if there were similarities between Shame & Eyes Wide Shut? I sure did.

I joke, mostly. It's a great film. But this was went on painfully too long.
It's the first thing the group that I went with joked about walking out.

Yeah, I think the point was to make the audience feel uncomfortable. There's a fine line between entertaining and manipulating audiences. It was weird observing Mulligan's face for so long, but in retrospect it certainly sunk into my memory and got the response the director wanted.

I loved that scene. It really struck a chord with me being that I lived most of my life and I still work in NYC.
You are around all these bright lights, different people from all walks of life & so much to do.
And yet you still feel like "God's Lonely Man".

Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

Finally got around to watching this, great movie.

I must disagree with everybody thinking that there was a incest vibe going on, the characters didn't seem that way. I think it had more to do with growing up in a abusive household. Fassbender is about 8 years older than mulligan, he could've been abused and left after graduating, moving the focus of the abuser to his sister. This would be one of the reasons for not wanting to see his sister or deal with his past, his sexual perversion stems out of not wanting to think about what happened to him or her. This is the reason why he can only get it up for prostitutes and quick hook ups, the one time he tries going out with a real girl he fails. He feels guilty for leaving her in that situation, and her being around pulls the plug on his well of emotions.

Fascinating movie, will definitely need to watch it again.

Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

Maybe I'm not the movie's intended audience, BUT I wish I had those 2+ hours of my life back. I appreciate the acting, but the themes and execution of the story was just a chore and bore to watch. Didn't like or care about anyone in this movie, which I guess weren't not supposed to. The incest vibe that they gave off was disconcerting given all of the brother/sister nudity together that went on.

Even if my sister was Cary Mulligan I probably wouldn't want to see her naked cause you know she'd be my sister.

Yeah, so I officially feel bad for anyone with a hot famous sister. This includes the brothers of say Carey Mulligan, Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johansson, etc;

Scarlett Johansson actually has a twin brother. But you know having an attractive sister means she prob has hot female friends. My older sister's track friends were always over hanging out.

I once saw a T-shirt that said "be nice to your sister, her friends might be hot."

Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

I loved this movie. In the space of a few months in 2011 we had this and Drive and both blew me away. I don't think this movie was too harsh in any way. It handled the situation well and truthfully.

And i agree with the poster who mentioned about the abuse of the brother and sister when they were growing up. I did not get so much of an incest vibe (i guess people think of Carey in the shower naked after throwing the towel...but the impression i got from her character is that she needed attention and had no control over what she did to get it. Hence the sobbing call to the guy dumping her, sex with the work friend of Fassbenders and the eventual damage she does at the end).

I think I saw Fassbender licking ass near the end there.

2011 was a good year for film and I would definitely say Shame was one the best for that year along with (some may not agree with all my choices):

Melancholia
The Kid with a Bike
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Drive
Martha Marcy May Marlene
The Skin I Live In
A Dangerous Method
Take Shelter
Bullhead
Into the Abyss
Margin Call
Killer Joe
Alps
Bellflower
Rampart
We Need to Talk About Kevin
Polisse
Margaret

I finally caught up with this. Didn't find it nearly as good as Hunger. The movie shows us a lot but it conveys little. Compare to Taxi Driver for example. We never know what's going on with the guy only that he's conflicted and in pain. I was hoping for bigger ideas to be explored.
