Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

Plus it's not like Brad Bird hasn't been asked about a sequel before. He said there has to be a great idea behind it first (as with all Pixar films). On top of that, they already are working on what, around 3 movies at least, and all the short films associated with them and planning other potential projects, so they have a lot on their plate. Bird is still one of the executives at Pixar, so I'm sure he has at least given input on all of these, in addition to working on his live action films.

For some reason I never really liked Finding Nemo. It's not bad...on a tech scale it's fucking great. It's a solid flick but I just never liked it. I just never liked the story I guess...wasn't to my liking.

Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

The Emperor's New Groove is the best Looney Tunes movie Disney ever made.

As for this? Toy Story 2 and 3 were just so damn good that I have to give them the benefit of the doubt, but then again the setup in Toy Story was very clearly that this was just one adventure out of many that these characters had over their lives. Monsters Inc. told a great story, but it was like that one story was an anomaly to those characters, so it's really hard for me to see where it could go.

As for Cars 2, I thought I had read somewhere in the past few years that the sequel would have the characters going around the world doing rally races and things like that, kind of like an old road trip movie and I liked the idea of that. But the accidental spy schtick isn't grabbing me at all.

And I would love to see a series of shorts in the Wall*E verse, starting right before the evacuation of humanity, and maybe showing some of Wall*E's emotional growth. I know it couldn't sustain a full-length narrative, but a few vignettes here and there would be great.

Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

New release date - June 21st, 2013 - right around the corner.

Pixar's Monsters University Pushed Back to 2013
Source: Disney•Pixar April 4, 2011

Disney•Pixar announced today that the Monsters, Inc. prequel Monsters University has been pushed back from November 2, 2012 to June 21, 2013. There are no other movies scheduled around that date yet.

Directed by Dan Scanlon, the film shows how best friends Sulley (voiced by John Goodman) and Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal) first met while attending Monsters University.

I can easily resist that for a few days until Brave comes out.

Looks pretty cool. Amazing how ageless the designs for the other monsters are so fresh and unique still.

Looks a lot better than Brave. I really enjoyed the first one so I'm definitely game for this.

Man, I get chills watching the Brave trailer.

This looks okay but I have no real affection for these characters. And Monsters Inc. in general is not one of my favorites. My kids kinda ruined that one for me with the rewatching.

Funny, the Brave trailer really does nothing to make me want to see it. I'll probably sit it out until the Blu-ray hits. This one looks like fun to me.

Same, except I'll probably skip the Blu and wait until it's on Starz or Netflix. Just doesn't do anything for me, although I love going around saying 'I'll be shootin' for me own hand!"

Cracks me up every time.

Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

I can do without the predictable song at the end and rivalry cliche but this can show some promise. Didn't know that Helen Mirren was in this playing that winged headmaster or whatever.

Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

Decent trailer. I'm still not sure what to make of it though. Out of Pixar's stable of films, and ignoring Cars 2, it's my least favorite. It's just not a world I was clamoring to visit again.

That being said, Crystal (world's oldest college student?) and Goodman are a great pair and Pixar rarely disappoints so I'll be there with my kids.

Loved the snail gag, and actually enjoyed the Motley Crue tune with it.

Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

I've yet to see Cars 2 though I really wanted to though cuz of Michael Caine. A more Mater centric tale does not attract me to see it.

I actually loved Monsters Inc. It's my favorite one, solely due to Goodman and Crystal. I've learned that I don't really like Crystal either. Yet love him in MI.

Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

There's an advance screening going on for college students and faculty in the D.C. area on Thursday. Fuck them for getting to see this early. If I was feeling up to it I'd sneak my way in, but I don't want to take away from the huge amounts of people who legitimately have a chance to see it.

I am looking forward to this. My son loves the original as do I. It's probably my 3rd favorite Pixar movie.

Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

The thing that troubles me about this film is that despite all the marketing I have no idea what the story is. The original Monsters Inc had a terrific story and concept: The reason monsters scare kids is that screams are their energy, and in truth monsters are terrified of kids. All of the "door" technology was brilliantly fun and the whole concept paralleled and lampooned our on-again/off-again energy crises.

But what the heck is Monsters University ABOUT? It's a prequel that doesn't seem to be about "scaring" or energy. Is it just a college comedy in the vein of Animal House? That's not clever. What's the hook? The marketing makes me suspect it has no hook. Just gags.

EDIT: And after reading the wikipedia synopsis I'm pretty sure I'm right. Sounds like a combination of Animal House and Real Genius.

You don't know the hook? Really? Have you not seen the trailers and voiceovers? this is a prequel in college were Mike and Sully met. I don't think you need much more of a hook than that.

OK, but you didn't know all that going into Monsters, Inc. either.

Yeah, I figure all you need to know is Mike and Sully meeting in college, antics ensue.

Re: Monsters University - aka Monsters Inc 2

I think the point was that it's a pretty basic, if not shallow premise for a Pixar film.
