Twixt (Francis Ford Coppola, Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern)
EXCLUSIVE: Francis Ford Coppola has begun quietly directing his next feature.
I'm told that Coppola is shooting Twixt Now And Sunrise, a thriller with overtones of horror, and that his star is Val Kilmer. Also in the cast are Elle Fanning (Super 8) and Bruce Dern (who long ago starred in the Coppola-scripted The Great Gatsby). But the picture's fulcrum is Kilmer, who plays a horror novelist. The film is based on a short story written by Coppola. It is shooting in Napa, on Coppola's property. Coppola hasn't tackled the horror genre since early in his career, when he directed Dementia 13, and of course Bram Stoker's Dracula. And some might consider Apocalypse Now to be horror.
While the internet has been buzzing about the possibility of a Top Gun sequel and whether Tony Scott and Tom Cruise will return to it (neither is attached), it is interesting to see Cruise's costar Kilmer catching a second career wind. Kilmer was pretty good in The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call--New Orleans, but it has been a long time since great turns in films like Heat and Tombstone. Sometimes it's nice to see veterans get another shot and I'm told Coppola sought out the actor.
Coppola, who'll be presented the AMPAS Governors Award on November 13, has picked up his directing pace. Taking nearly a decade off after The Rainmaker, Coppola returned with more personal, indie-flavored efforts. He directed the 2007 Tim Roth-starrer Youth Without Youth, followed by 2009's Tetro.
I'm told that Coppola has funded the picture independently and hasn't yet sought out distribution.

I loved Tetro and the direction FCC is going. I'll be checking this out.

I've yet to see YWY or Tetro. Tetro for sure looks the most interesting. I'd like to believe that FCC is still a great director. But honestly...I just never felt that after Apocalypse Now.

I like how the article's author thinks Dracula was one of Coppola's early works. What, is the author 16?

While Tetro bored me to the point I had to return the DVD without completing it, I admired the artsy/indie nature it had and Coppola for choosing to make it as opposed to some studio project. This sounds interesting, so I might give it a shot.

i'm sorry but that doesn't look very good, reminds me of The Ninth Gate. I'll still see anything Coppola does.

What's with Tom Waits narrating the first bit? Love that guy.
Looks unconventional. Trailer needs trimmed up a bit. There was way too much info in it.
I dig it.

And if Val Kilmer is the real killer and is some schitzo, I'm going to protest by throwing my shoe at the screen.

Waits and him go way back. I wonder if he'll have an acting role in the film since his name is on the marquee or was that bit it?

Finally got around to watching this. Pretty awful. The tone felt so off, so many moments right on the verge of amateurism, I'm astounded this is by a director of the stature of Francis Ford Coppola.
Something was horribly off about the dialouge audio, but I can't put my finger on it. I'm guessing this entire movie was shot on a greenscreen soundstage and they used the audio from the camera mike. Everyone sounded like actors on a theater stage. Really poor recording.
The real life death of Coppola's son is felt heavily in this film, and infact I'm willing to bet is what sparked the idea for this project. Shame the movie turned out so wretched.

That's disappointing to hear. I bought the Twixt blu ray just a few days ago but haven't had the time to check it out yet. I thought Youth Without Youth was pretty good and Tetro was a near masterpiece. Just an excellent film. I was really hoping Coppola was on a roll. Now I'm less excited to watch Twixt. Boo urns.

Some screenshots to give one an idea of the less-than-stellar VFX:

I thought this was gonna be another one of those movies with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.
