Twixt (Francis Ford Coppola, Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern)

Re: Twixt Now And Sunrise (Francis Ford Coppola, Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern)
After all the negative reviews I wasn't very hopeful going in, but I really enjoyed this. It kept me thinking for 84 minutes. The photography was beautiful. Bruce Dern and Val Kilmer were great. I loved Kilmer's little nod to Apocalypse Now during the talking head montage. I was cracking up. It was slow at times, but it was never boring, it kept me interested. Not a perfect film by any means, but definitly a good one.

It feels like Salem's Lot meets Twin Peaks with a little Guy Maddin sprinkled in the dream sequences.
I'm really digging the new direction FFC has taken along with William Friedkin in making these smaller more personal films.

I noticed this was on Netflix, hadn't seen the thread here or heard about it.
I loved it. I loved it from the first moments with that Tom Waits intro. Kilmer, Dern, and Fanning were all great but for me the scene stealer was Ben Chaplin as Edgar Allan Poe. I love that Coppola is still taking chances with his films, other longtime directors should take note.

its just a shame it never found an audience in North America. People are just so dug in with their beliefs that Coppola is no longer a good director. Which just isn't true.

To me this felt like a low budget Dracula. It was a sumptuous gothic take but told in a more human and meditative fashion than the theatrical excesses of Dracula. It's not as much of an attention grabber as Dracula but it's more mature and satisfying IMO.

I prefer left Twix to right Twix. Hopefully we can get a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup movie and find out who got peanut butter in the chocolate or chocolate in the peanut butter.

A new cut is being released by Lionsgate at the end of February:

Saw this at TIFF back whenever, and assumed Coppola was fine with it. I think he was there, although it was only Kilmer at my showing, but I don't recall any tales of producer interference or anything like that. Thought it was ok, if forgettable, but might revisit it if this edition showed up at my local library branch.

So this was made when Val Kilmer was still a star, Bruce Dern was only in his 70s and Elle Fanning was still a child actress, right?

I might give it a chance at a second look, but my main memory of the movie was how amateurish it looked. I was astonished Coppola would make such a lousy-looking movie.

Indeed. His post-screening Q&A lasted about three times longer than most, as I recall (they're usually about 15 minutes). He wasn't uninteresting, but it almost felt like he didn't have anywhere else to be, so he just went off topic repeatedly and took whatever questions people wanted to ask, about anything.

Re: Twixt (Francis Ford Coppola, Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern)
I'm pretty sure I saw this updated cut sometime last year. Interesting to see that it's getting a physical release.
It was mentioned that Coppola wanted to do a touring road show of the film, where he would edit it in real time based on the audience reactions. So he seemingly had all sorts of different scenes and alternate takes that he could throw in as he saw fit. I don't think that ever happened, though.
If this disc has all of that unused footage, that may be worth seeing... but the movie was... not great. I'm being kind.
edit: yep, it was a double feature of Dementia 13 with B'Twixt Now and Sunrise. I actually enjoyed D13 quite a bit

The original is not a particularly good film, an incoherent mishmash of faux Tim Burton visuals and Stephen King mystery. Coppola made it with his family comprising a lot of the crew. I have no idea if the unused footage would make it materially better.

I blind bought the Twixt BD at a flea market a couple of years ago, watched it once and took it to The Exchange for store credit. It was not a keeper.
