If he's not going to do Suicide Squad, Tom Hardy.

Seth Gordon has exited “Uncharted,” Sony’s adaptation of the popular video game series, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.
A representative for Sony had no comment, while a representative for Gordon didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Sony chief Tom Rothman had been weighing the fate of the project since he took over the reins of the studio. Rather than slash the budget, he decided to take the project in a new creative direction, which prompted Gordon’s exit.
Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing “Uncharted” for Atlas along with the Arads. Mark Boal penned the most recent draft of the script, though he’s a little smarter and more serious than your average four-quadrant blockbuster.
Sony is seeking a major star for “Uncharted,” which plays like a riff on the “Indiana Jones” franchise.
Gordon has no shortage of development projects waiting in the wings, including “Ground Control to Major Tom” and “One Night on the Hudson.” He’s repped by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
Gordon’s exit was first reported by Heroic Hollywood.

UPDATE: Director Seth Gordon is apparently off Uncharted. The project is in development hell because Rothman came in and asked them to do the movie at a smaller budget. Sony was hoping this was their Indiana Jones and Rothman is looking at it like Resident Evil.

Hey, it's an uncommon case in which I'm glad the studio has prevailed over the director - for now.

Remember Bioshock with Gore Verbinski? Or Halo with Peter Jackson and/or Neill Blomkamp. Sometimes it's better to cancel and move on. At least we still have Assassins Creed, right? RIGHT??

At this point, just hire the cast and creative team of the games and have at it. Heck, mocap the whole thing a'la The Adventures of Tin Tin so they can go nuts with the scope of the action setpieces.

I just finished watching guardians of the galaxy again and Chris Pratt would make a perfect Drake

I can see where one see that but I also don't think he'd fit it. Much like Indiana Jones, Nathan fulfills these grand adventures but he's a man. Star Lord and Owen are men but they're very much young boys in attitude. Indy and Nathan, while hitting their cheeky moments are men doing adult things. Pratt's characters are like teen boys living out their adventure fantasies in attitude. That's the big difference with Drake and Pratt's roles. They're too on the nose for the latter.

‘Bad Boys 3’ Director Joe Carnahan to Write ‘Uncharted’ Adaptation for Sony (EXCLUSIVE)
Justin Kroll Film Reporter@krolljvar July 29, 2016 | 12:21PM PT
Sony has recruited Joe Carnahan to write the latest draft of the script for its adaptation of the popular video game “Uncharted.”
Carnahan, who is also an accomplished director and producer, told Variety that he’s unable to also helm, unless production is pushed back, due to schedule constraints. “Bad Boys 3” will be his next directing gig. Production on the sequel gears up early next year — after Will Smith wraps David Ayer’s “Bright.”
“In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I’m only on board to write the script,” he said.
“Uncharted” is an action-adventure film based on the critically-acclaimed and top-selling PlayStation video game series, which follows the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake.
Carnahan said entering the world of Nathan Drake is a dream come true.
“Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity, but that world has always fascinated me. Especially when you go to a museum today and wonder how a piece got there to begin with,” he said. “Plus, the property itself is so popular that it was hard to turn down an opportunity to work on it.”
The film will be a co-production between Arad and Atlas Entertainment Production, and will be produced by Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad. Sony creative exec Jonathan Kadin is overseeing the project.
The video game series was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment America.
In addition to directing “Bad Boy 3,” which reunites Smith and Martin Lawrence, Carnahan is also developing and producing the Frank Grillo-starrer “Wheelman” for Netflix.
Carnahan is repped by CAA and the Arlook Group.

That's one way to guarantee a mindless pile of crap, let Carnahan get his hands on it. Sad, I was hoping for something fun.

Let it die... especially if he's just writing a new draft based on what came before.
Is it possible to reboot a series before a single frame of film has been shot?

How such a no brainer, practically-writes-itself, adventure movie could get stuck in development hell is beyond me.

I know a studio wants a younger dude to start a franchise, but after all these years of development hell there is still no better casting choice for Drake.

I didn't realize Bay wasn't directing BB3. Those are some of the few movies where I feel he really shines.
How hard is it to make a movie based off of Uncharted? The games play out as interactive movies already, and heavily borrow from a few movies in the first place. I wouldn't mind seeing a prequel depicting how the bad guys are able to get so many recruits for Drake to kill left and right.

I mean out of all the gaming properties bought by Hollywood, Uncharted should have been the easiest to get off the ground and succeed.

After almost a decade of starts and stops in the film’s development cycle, Sony Pictures has reportedly removed Uncharted from its upcoming release calendar. The film was previously scheduled to hit theaters June 30, 2017.

Every time I hear Nolan North in an animated superhero movie, I think about this project.
