Top Gun is drivel and propaganda for the simple minded. I found it heavy-handed, cringeworthy and downright embarrassing.
Different strokes.

I just don't get the argument. Pro military = propaganda. Anti military = thought provoking. Yawn.

I'm not talking about other films only Top Gun, which I find to be a handsomely mounted piece of very effective propaganda. I don't believe the film was made soley as a recruiting tool though. It was a byproduct of the finished film and appealed to, amongst others, a pretty specific demographic at that time (teen age boys).

Not sure in regards to your first question.

And beyond that, it was a cool way to see a bunch of badass fighter jets. Of course it appealed to teen age boys. Who doesn't think fighter jets are cool?
Was True Lies a propaganda film whose purpose was to recruit for the CIA? Was Twister a propaganda film to recruit people to become meteorologists? Was Armageddon a propaganda film to recruit for NASA? Why can't a film that portrays American soldiers in a positive be anything other than a propaganda film?

So we're all just ignoring the fact that the first movie sucked and is only memorable for featuring the gayest volleyball game in mainstream movie history?

Top Gun 2 is still aiming for lift off said Jerry Bruckheimer today. “For 30 years we’ve been trying to make a sequel and we’re not going to stop. We still want to do it with Tom and Paramount are still interested in making it,” the producer said Sunday at the Produced By conference. “What Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as Maverick,” added Bruckheimer of Tom Cruise who starred as the rebel fighter jet pilot in the original 1986 movie. “It’s something he is excited about so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we’ll get it made,” Bruckheimer said about the sequel and its star. Bruckheimer noted that the death of original Top Gun director Tony Scott last August did put a pause on the project.

I doubt a sequel will be made now, since Tony Scott is dead. Ridley could put it together as a tribute, but it might come off as a parody.

Tom Cruise has said as much - no chance of a sequel now that Scott is gone. Unless Bruckheimer has gotten him to change his mind (which would be a 180 on what Cruise has stated recently).

I avoided Cruise for a long time after all the Scientology crap...and while I still don't agree with it, he did a great job with "Ghost Protocol". I'm excited for the fifth one, and I still haven't seen "Valkyrie".

I said the exact thing about Ridley Scott making another Alien movie. I think it's slim, but still possible that Paramount and Cruise will still make one. When there's money to still be made on the Top Gun name, they will find a way to make it.
