Seemed to focus more on the action and not the story. Is that because the story is so frickin convoluted that they don't want to scare of casual viewers?

The general public cant be bothered to read and think about what is put on a page, they respond to the action in a movie to decide if they like something or not.
I read the entire series and really like it except for the ending. That being said, I think the trailer looks interesting and i will be seeing the movie.

And it's important to note that this won't be a direct adaptation of the books. It's more of a quasi-sequel/reboot, so it's hard for book readers to guess which elements of the series the movie will be faithful to. If I remember correctly, the gunslinger doesn't even go to Earth until book 6, so it's clear that this film is going to be a very different beast. Having said that, it would have been a very difficult series to adapt faithfully, and I'm sure many of the mystical elements and references to other pop-culture elements will be toned down. As a King fan who liked most of the books, I thought the trailer was pretty good.

Not a fan of the trailer. Tone seems off and too hollywood action movie.
Elba is fine. Nothing it the trailer stood out but I still think he can pull of the role. Roland is really a slow burn character anyway. I didn't like the way they had him reloading. Roland reloads inhumanly fast due to his extreme amount of training making him efficient, not doing tricks.
McConaughey does nothing for me. I'm not a big fan of the character himself and always thought he worked better as a mysterious figure like the earlier books.

This and IT are two movies that I'm really excited to see this summer. Stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy are must see - but I know exactly what to expect. But IT and The Dark Tower are unknowns.

I don't think it would be difficult to do a fairly faithful adaptation. I do like the concept of this being a "different time around" since the books do lead to a Sisyphusian tale. I think they should have stuck with the first few books faithfully and strayed as the later books work themselves into pop-culture references. That would be more true to the idea that this has happened before and will happen again until Roland "gets it right".

Honestly, I kept thinking "Masters of the Universe" during the trailer. This isn't about the property we know and love, it is about a human child interjected as the POV character and brought to our planet/time to cut production costs.
I was good with the selection of Elba and I am a fan of his work. However that trailer did not sell me on him as Roland. Looked like the same character he played in Ghost Rider 2.

The story arc is convoluted over the course of the novels. The stories that make up that arc, not so much. I am fearing they are trying to cram too much world building into one movie rather than telling the serialized stories and letting the overall arc evolve naturally.

I thought it looked entertaining. I'm a fan of Idris and Matthew, but did get a sense that Matthew will be hamming the shit out of his character.

The trailer looks great... but not Dark Tower great. The books are too epic to be confined to a single movie. I'll still see it though

McConaughey is closer physically, but he'd have to bring out something I've never seen in him to play Roland like the book. Elba seems like a more natural choice in terms of screen presence.

I've read the first two books in the series and my overall reaction is: I dunno. If they plan on being faithful, then I think this is a pretty clever trailer. If not, then it appears they've just turned it into another Mad Max/Matrix wannabe.
