Re: Hobo With A Shotgun
Definitely must own that one-sheet. Awesome.
The funny thing is that, although being a big Rutger fan ever since Soldier of Orange through his B days until now (and I thought he would have made an awesome Ivanhoe, especially after seeing him in Ladyhawke and Flesh & Blood), I'd still rather see the low-budget atmosphere from the original 'fake' version.
You know, when a movie is intentionally designed to be the prototypical grindhouse scenario, it deserves to be made in that style. The cleaned-up Haeur version still has a cheesy, exploitative 'feel' to it but doesn't have the same look (it's like the difference between Plant Terror and Death Proof). The cheap teaser reminded me of the cheapo revenger thriller Blood, Guts, and a Handful of Cash, while the actual film trailer reminded me more of early John Carpenter (only with better production values). Likewise, the original Last Half on the Left, I Spit on Your Grave, Thriller, etc. had that really cheap look that just added to the entertainment value (ditto for original Inglorious Bastards & other low-budget "classics"). Clear camera work & decent production values just don't go together with Hobo With a Shotgun. I'd like to have seen Snakes on a Plane made with no-name actors & a shoe-string budget...it probably would have been a whole lot more fun.
I'll still check it out...all the while wondering about the lost masterpiece that might have been.
