Is this god awful idea actually happening? They're not really going to make these are they?

No alien computer system in the universe can fuck with that.

FOX lost their rights to distribute Star Wars, their Alien franchise is on life support, their Die Hard franchise is almost dead - they need something besides X-Men movies over the next several summers.

I thought they still had the distribution rights to the Holy Trilogy?

They have the video distribution rights for the existing films until 2020, but Disney will distribute the new films theatrically.

Re: Independence Day Parts 2 & 3 (D: Emmerich)

EXCLUSIVE: After spending several years looking to generate a sequel or two to the 1996 Fox smash hit Independence Day, it looks like director Roland Emmerich and co-writer and producer Dean Devlin are going to have to take on those earth leveling aliens without Will Smith. I’m told reliably that Smith informed the studio that he won’t be joining in on a sequel that the filmmakers hope to have in theaters for July 4 weekend, 2016. That marks the 20th anniversary of the 1996 original that grossed $811 million worldwide and launched Smith on a trajectory to become the world’s most bankable movie star.

Now, this doesn’t mean that the ID4 sequel can’t happen. In fact, Fox is very keen to see it through and what studio wouldn’t want another installment of such a big movie? When Emmerich and Devlin wrote the first draft before handing it over to Amazing Spider-Man scribe James Vanderbilt, they hatched two distinctly different versions of the movie. Vanderbilt has been working on two separate scripts. One has Smith as the centerpiece, and the other takes the battle to the aliens without his cocky hero fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller. I don’t believe that Smith has had the final conversation yet with Emmerich, but that will likely happen shortly. I was told not to set this in stone, because Smith has been back and forth before on whether to make the movie, though I hear he is pretty much decided.

Smith, who next stars with Wolf Of Wall Street‘s Margot Robbie in the grifter tale Focus for Warner Bros, is also not expected to reprise his role as Jay in the next Men In Black, as Sony Pictures works on a reboot of that franchise. On that one, it has been incredibly difficult for the studio to make any money despite high ticket sales because of the gross paid to all the high priced principals on the film.

I don't know why Smith wouldn't do a sequel. It would be a huge paycheck, and he hasn't exactly been lighting up the box office lately. He's probably going to regret saying 'no'.

I doubt it. All the movies he turns down turn into flops anyhow, Wild Wild West was a much better pick than The Matrix.

Re: Independence Day Parts 2 & 3 (D: Emmerich)

I don't really understand why the studios are still so set on a sequel to this after all this time especially if Will Smith won't even be in it. It's been enough time that I doubt most people who remember the film are really going to care that much anymore and modern audiences might be into it but probably not because it's a sequel to the original film.

Simple solution. I think it may have been mentioned already.

Cast Michael B. Jordan as Hiller's son. He's an up and coming star.

I think you got a couple of actors mixed up so I went ahead and fixed that for you.

Re: Independence Day Parts 2 & 3 (D: Emmerich)

Hiller and Jasmine weren't married in ID4.

This is the actor who played her son.

He was 8 years old in 1996. He would be 28 in 2016. He's a no name, so he's out of the question. Jaden Smith is way too young.

Michael B. Jordan would be 29 years old in 2016. Far more believable to play Steve Hiller's step son should they go that route.

/\ Why do you need Hiller or his son, at all?

Nevermind, why do we need this movie at all?

The first made $800M worldwide.

So it's kind of a stupid question to be asking.

Just let Channing Tatum star in it. Pair him with another young comedic actor and they're set.

Hardly. Regardless of how much money it made nearly 20 years ago, does anyone see this ending favorably? Is anyone actually looking forward to a sequel?

"I am!" says 2001 Trespoochies. If they get those fucking annoying kids of Randy Quaid's character back, then I'm in.

Agreed. It would be a stupid question to be asking in 1997 or 1998 but it's been 20 years. The ship has kind of sailed on this being a series. If they had such a great idea for a sequel they would have made it in the late 90s. This just sounds like scrounging to me.
