re: Independence Day Parts 2 & 3 (D: Emmerich)
The "fan" plot-line is a re-hash of an old proposal for something else ... was it V? Starship Troopers (possibly in the the book)? I can't recall now ... but it is almost identical to something I've read somewhere before. Mankind is locked in war with an alien race when another alien race shows up to join the fight. "The enemy of my enemy ... yadda-yadda." (And don't say Alien Vs. Predator.)
I'm totally on board for more ID4 ... I loved the first one. I still swear that there was a line/scene cut out from when I first saw it in the theater though ... when the President is "debunking" Roswell and the adviser stops him with "That's not exactly true, sir." I recall the President saying "What part?" The adviser replies, "All of it." (Or I could be crazy.)

Had a lot of fun with the movie. Forgot Mary McDonnell was in that.
If Will Smith returns, I would like Baldwin and Goldblum back, too.
Doubt sequels will be better than the first.

Because the President says something like "why didn't you tell me?" and the other guy says "plausible deny-ability".
Also, no Goldblum or Hirsch = NO SALE.

This is good news only to people who thought Bill Pullman's speech before the big final attack was "one of the most inspirational moments in the history of world cinema".

I think there are a few good quotes from ID4, but that speech isn't one of them.
Pretty much the obligatory Will Smith "Aww hell naw!" and anything Jeff Goldblum.

This could be good in the hands of another director. But Emmercih hasnt produced a watchable movie in over a decade.

If ID4 wasn't so inconsequential to the history of film, I would call Pullman's presence performance one of the most conspicuous casting failures in cinematic history.

The book was endorsed by Thomas Edison, the hero of the book—though not by Wells. The themes and messages of Serviss's book are diametrically opposed to Wells's original. In it, Edison travels to Mars, his inventions (including the disintegrator ray) allow an Earth spacefleet to destroy the Martians' ability to make war after several exciting battles. There are ship-to-ship battles, and battles between Earth ships and Martian ground forts. This was perhaps the first space opera, although the term did not yet exist; it was perhaps the most literal of the Edisonades.

Independence Day 2 -- Independence Harder
Independence Night
Co-dependence Day
Independence Strikes Back
Independence Day 2: Red, White, and Blonde
Plot: The remaining aliens have been "integrated" into our world, but live in tightly controlled ghettos in the major cities. All alien technology has ceased working, except one mother ship that still hovers overhead. The general population has become fed up with the aliens mooching off of society that remaining in the ghetto is unsafe for the aliens. The government decides to relocate them. Will Smith is sent in to lead the relocation efforts ... wait. I think I've seen this before too ...

Almost everything. Granted I haven't seen it since 1994 in theaters, but my bored remembrances are pretty much "Wow what a colossal POS." YMMV, as always.

re: Independence Day Parts 2 & 3 (D: Emmerich)
From Dark Horizons:
Fifteen years on, "Independence Day" director Roland Emmerich and producer/writer Dean Devlin are finishing up back-to-back sequel scripts to that 1996 alien invasion global hit reports Vulture.
Back in 2009, Fox reportedly started working on structuring a deal to sign Will Smith to return to the role of Captain Stephen Hiller and shoot both films back-to-back, but the studio balked at Smith's $50 million price tag along with Emmerich’s own hefty salary.
As a result, the various parties retreated and Devlin and Emmerich got to work on getting the scripts right. Now they're about done and are expected to be delivered to Fox by early to mid-December. The studio is also reportedly willing to make the movies without Smith if necessary.
What's known about the sequels is that it will be a single story across two films, but still separate enough to be films on their own (ala "Back to the Future 2 & 3") rather than one long film split in half (ala "Deathly Hallows").
