Question for anyone who saw "Leatherheads"

Maybe I'm too tired to be watching a movie or just dense, but I have a question about the movie, "Leatherheads." The question is a spoiler, so be forewarned:

The question is a spoiler, so be forewarned: Spoiler: I still don't understand how Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski) got the Germans to surrender. He fell asleep, and then the Germans inadvertantly joined him, but he got everyone to surrender? Can someone explain this to me in detail because I really feel like I'm missing something. Thanks in advance.
