One of the first anime I ever saw. I've never been so excited by a 30 second preview. I knew for it to be done right it had to be a Japanese production (didn't Disney buy the rights?)

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS!

As hard as "Speed Racer" flopped (and very undeservingly, I might add), I don't see this doing much better.

Oh My God.

I just filled the cup.

Please tell me this is real and happening.

I went to the website listed on the 30 second trailer http://yamato-movie.net/ but I don't read japanese. There is some kind of count-down though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_B...ve_action_film)

This is now my single-most looked forward to movie of 2010.

Unlike Speed Racer, this one is being made by and for its country of origin and is still popular.

I have had the above "toy" displayed in my living room for 8 years after importing it from Japan for about $400.

Not a great video but pics are here http://www.collectiondx.com/node/2063

I had a cup nearby enough to grab, otherwise mine would have been all over the floor as well.

Re: Live action Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato!

That was super cool. I actually bought the screenplay for "Star Blazers" at a comicon and lets just say thank goodness that piece of crap is not being made. I actually am pretty excited by that teaser.

This had better be shown in the United States - otherwise I may just have to fly out to Japan.

I almost wept when I saw the shot of the Wave Motion Gun being activated.

Sandor better use his legs to blow some shit up. And hopefully some of them cosmic fireflies will show up to eat Nova's shirt.

I've heard of the anime, seen the ship, but never saw this as a kid or even now. Looks cool though...for the time limit given.

Re: Live action Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato!

Don't get swept away from some quick shots of action. This is a Japanese movie. They've done live-action movies of their famous anime before. Expect a lack of story, a lot of filler until the next action scene, and some annoying unrelatable characters - then you won't be disappointed! It's the director of Always 1 & 2, Returner and the writer of K-20. This will probably suck.

And don't forget starring "Kimtaku" lead singer of the Japanese boy band that won't die, SMAP.

Re: Live action Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato!

So I'm confused, there was a Yamato that opened in Japan in December '09 and disappeared pretty quickly (opened at #7) odd.

Odder, I had no idea there was a Professor Layton movie.

Edit: Nevermind, it was a new Yamato anime that came out and bombed.

I'd hope so, but there were reports (Io9) over at Twitch that a December animated rehash of Space Battleship Yamato flopped hard which doesn't necessarily spell well for a live action piece. I have yet to confirm sources.

I was eight or nine when the Star Blazers series hit state-side, the perfect age ..and it was probably the biggest single influence next to G.I. Joe on my childhood. A live action version of this can not arrive soon enough to satisfy my adult tastes!!

Yamazaki's skills may be on the bench, but I liked the visual style of his work in Returner. Returner was a super low budget film with shitty CGI but I have a feeling the budget on Star Blazers will allow some more room in the quality department. It's probably going to be either really good or absolutely terrible. I'm willing to give it a chance.

Re: Live action Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato!

'Returner' was so damn derivative of American movies... but Kaneshiro was a revelation. I really thought he might make it in the US, especially after 'House of Flying Daggers.'

As for the flopped anime, not surprised. After 30 years of anime people are tired of it. But live action will wake people up.

Re: Live action Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato!

I saw a preview for Star Blazers Rebirth

I hope it is all hand drawn animation and not that cheap computer CGI crap but with all the slow closeup shots of the Argo it seems like CGI.

Re: Live action Star Blazers/Space Cruiser Yamato!

New trailer. Both feature a song called "Love Lives" from Steven Tyler's first solo album.

(Sorry for the double trailer but braindead YouTube gave me the code in this state and I can't figure out how to remove the second video.)

Plus there is an English language site for the movie.

38 days to release. Are we stoked yet?

The only live-action Japanese movie based on classic anime that I endorse is:
