Jason Statham A Possible 'Transformers 4' Lead
By Andrew Weymes on July 05, 2011

Jason Statham A Possible 'Transformers 4' Lead

Director Michael Bay's desire to move on from the 'Transformers' series doesn't appear to be something that the studio shares. With or without him, it looks like there's going to be a fourth film. The performance of 'Dark of the Moon' at the box office over this past weekend is too great to ignore.

Apparently the studio is looking to replace the star of the series thus far, Shia LaBeouf. Showbiz Spy is reporting that at the top of the list of his replacements is action star, Jason Statham. A source of theirs told them:

"It’s clear the franchise still has huge potential but with a new leading man capable of taking Transformers in a new, darker direction. Jason could be just the man to do that and his relationship with Rosie would be an added bonus in marketing the movie."

Statham is romantically involved with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the actress who replaced Megan Fox as the love interest of Shia LaBeouf's character in 'Dark of the Moon.' The actor has had pivotal roles in the 'Transporter' series, the 'Crank' series, 'The Expendables' and 'The Mechanic.' His upcoming features include 'Blitz' and 'Killer Elite.'

Getting rid of Shia is fine, but do not bring in Jason Statham to replace him. And do not bring back Rosie McLipstein at all. We should be shedding as many humans as possible at this point.

only if the movie is 100 minutes tops, is R-rated and resembles 'District 9' - it might work

I don't like Statham, so even 10 minutes would seem too long, especially if they're going to use his relationship with Rosie as the hook. Ugh.

Re: Transformers 3 Announced

If Statham was a NEST soldier (possible) or Sam several decades after the events of DOTM (highly unlikely), I'd be cool with that. As for using his relationship with ROsie to promote the movie, I doubt it. Who would give a crap?

If he was part of NEST and worked directly w/ the Autobots for a Military action w/ some Robot destruction as the focus..fuck yeah that's cool. Cuz..well...I can't imagine they'd insert any of that bs filler that the Sam character brings along.

Re: Transformers 3 Announced

If they make a fourth, I know I'll go see it but to be honest, I'm content getting my TF fix from Transformers: Prime on Hub now that I've seen Dark of the Moon (which I thoroughly enjoyed). Plenty of other Transformers to draw on for future stories. I'd be happy to see them leave Earth in future stories, to be honest. I know the theme of this trilogy has been the Autobots adopting Earth as their new home, but the relationship with humans has been rather forced throughout these three films. I liked it better when there were just a few human characters interacting with lots of Transformers rather than the reverse.

But, you know, whatever. I'll go see whatever comes out and I know it.

Re: Transformers 3 Announced

The next one should be set in the future like the original cartoon. If there has to be a human element have it be set 20 years in the future and revolve around Sam's and Carly's kid. Then they could just explain away that both parents died in some kind of accident and Sam's parents died of natural causes. Or have it set 50 years in the future so every human from the original trilogy would be dead and there would be no reason to bring back Tyrese and Duhmel and the rest of the humans.

Even though I hate him, Rodimus could be introduced along with other new Transformers that the 1986 movie introduced. Then just pretend that Galvatron is an entirely new Decepticon rather than Megatron reincarnated and he could be a new super villain.

It would be extremely easy to make a 4th one. Just rehash parts of the 1986 movie. Since there wouldn't be any established human characters it could be more or less 100% robot oriented.

Re: Transformers 3 Announced

That'd work until Spielberg decides it should be about a boy and his hoverboard and Galvatron gets killed by a teenager after Optimus Prime gets his ass handed to him.

Did I miss a scene that explained why John Malkovich all of a sudden became utterly subservient to both Shia LeBouf and John Turturro? Yes they were investigating the stuff, but what did he have to do with it?

You didn't miss a thing. Lazerbeak tossed him around like a ragdoll and then he was doing Sam and SImmons favours in exchange for a playdate with Bumblebee.

I love the '86 movie. Seriously, it's #3 on my Flickchart. But honestly, I've already seen that movie. I have no real desire to see it remade any more than I want to see episodes of the original Star Trek rehashed in the current movie series.

I gotta say, I'm stunned by how many online reviews I've encountered that insist this movie "makes no sense." I can accept finding it simplistic or uninspired, but most of the scenes of the first half introduce new information that set up the next scene. It's a pretty straightforward narrative to follow, really. It surprises me how many seem to think it makes them appear sophisticated to declare that they couldn't keep up with a Transformers movie. Whatever.

It's not hard to make sense of the plot. It's hard to make sense of the screenwriting choices.

I agree with that. A clear example is Sam's heart-to-heart with his parents. It's an awkwardly placed scene given the Decepticons were invading. Of course, it was also awkward that the Decepticons went into hiding moments after they invaded only to make their assault at a later time. Worse still, no one in the military thought to take advantage of such a bizarre respite in order to mobilize their forces and prepare for combat. Hell, after NEST was decimated, what the hell were the rest of the US (and worldwide) armed forces doing?

I can't stand Statham either. They might as well cast Channing Tatum too, but as a transformer. If anyone can pull off a robotic performance, it's Tatum.

This is something I've noticed as well, and not just for this film. It's rather frustrating since I cannot understand how somebody is unable to follow such a simple plot as you say. Baffling.

Re: Transformers 3 Announced

love Jason Statham, but the action should always involve the robots, and by casting someone like him implies more human action scenes, which is just a no-no.

Re: Transformers 3 Announced

Collider.com had a list of directors they thought could take over the franchise. Roland Emmerich, Joe Johnston, Jon Turteltaub, Stephen Sommers, Louis Leterrier, and David Yates.

Out of that group, I kinda prefer Leterrier. He has a bit of hack in him, but he can direct action.

I'm not really talking about remaking it. I just meant take some things from that movie and use them in Transformers 4. Galvatron for example.

Spoiler:
If there is a 4th movie, they'll need a new bad guy. Everybody is dead. Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Shockwave, Sentinel Prime. I suppose they could introduce an entirely new character but they already did that with The Fallen in the second one and he sucked ass. Galvatron is the only logical villain left.

So you add Galvatron and some new Transformers (both Autobots and Decepticons) and set the movie in the future with an entirely new cast of humans that hopefully have a lot less screen time. They wouldn't have to totally remake the 1986 movie but just use bits and pieces of it to fill in the gaps of the new story.

Of course it would be sweet if Unicron showed up, but in my opinion that would be impossible. I don't think the movie making technology is advanced enough yet to create a believable Unicron.

After watching G.I. Joe with friends, we were confused why Hasbro would've had Sommers direct that instead of Transformers (and Bay, obviously, directing G.I. Joe).

Because only Sommers can take a $175m budget and make it look cheap.

If you told me Transformers was 2 years older and $25m cheaper than G.I. Joe, I'd never believe you.
