Rank 'Em as You Saw 'Em: Late 1990s

You know the Rank 'Em As You See 'Em threads. Here, we'll rank movies that you saw in theaters in 1995 to 1999.

You may find this helpful to remember everything you saw:

POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE and PRINCESS MONONOKE were released in the U.S. in 1999.

RUMBLE IN THE BRONX and SUPERCOP were released in the U.S. in 1996.

That's pretty much all you need to know.

Re: Rank 'Em as You Saw 'Em: Late 1990s

All screenings at the Oldham 8 Theater, except as noted:

1995
Batman Forever (6/16, Showcase Cinemas)
Powder (11/4) bomb
GoldenEye (11/17 & 11/24) (lost half a point for my being bored during the tank chase)
Toy Story (11/26 & 12/1)
Jumanji (12/16) bomb

1996
Grumpier Old Men (1/6)
Mr. Holland's Opus (2/9)
(not sure I'd rate it that highly today; I haven't seen it since)
Muppet Treasure Island (2/16 & 2/18)
Down Periscope (3/15) bomb
Happy Gilmore (3/15)
Diabolique (3/22) (I think I rate it more from having liked it than it being good; I'd have to re-watch it to know what I think these days)
Sgt. Bilko (3/29) bomb
Executive Decision (4/5)
The Quest (4/26 & 5/3) (pretty bad, really, but for some reason I absolutely loved it)
Twister (5/10) (hokey love story notwithstanding, it was exactly as advertised: great fun)
Celtic Pride (5/12) bomb
Mission: Impossible (5/24)
Spy Hard (5/24)
Dragonheart (5/31) (loses 1 star for David Thewlis being so distractingly ugly)
The Rock (6/10) (sheer fun)
Eraser (6/21)
The Nutty Professor (6/28) (I'm almost ashamed of how much I laughed at this)
Independence Day (7/2) (gaping plot holes aside, it's just great fun from the era when Will Smith was still fun to watch)
Kingpin (7/26)
Escape from L.A. (8/18) (and no, I still haven't seen Escape from New York)
The Island of Dr. Moreau (8/23)
Space Jam (11/15)
Beavis and Butt-head Do America (11/20) (which really surprised me, as I did not particularly care for the TV series)
Star Trek: First Contact (11/22 & 11/29)
Mars Attacks! (12/13)

1997

My God! I've seen a lot of sh*t in the theater.

Mainly I was curious if I could remember everything I have seen in the theater, rather than rating. Maybe I will try for my entire life at some point. There may still be a few missing. Like Your Friends & Neighbors from 1998. Wasn't in Wikipedia, but I know I saw it that year. Where's the Touch Of Evil re-release I saw that year too? If the Star Wars SE's are on the list, that should be as well. Anyway, I expect this is about 98% complete for me.

What's the best year for movies in my opinion? I gotta think about it a while.

And by the way, Giles, did you keep all those ticket stubs? Or is that from memory?!?!

Re: Rank 'Em as You Saw 'Em: Late 1990s

1999 by a decent margin. I went through Wiki's lists of films released per year and just made a quick count of the films in each year that I enjoyed/found memorable. 1999 won with 24 counts. 1997 was 2nd place with 19.

1995 was decent, but 1996 and 1998 were glacial.

Scrolling through those wikipedia lists, I'm amazed at how many films I saw in the theaters, most of them terrible. Congo? Bullet Proof? Dracula: Dead and Loving It? Ugh! I had terrible taste as a teenager. It's funny, looking back on it - back then, going to the movies was just something to do. Whether or not the film in question was actually worthwhile wasn't really an issue. I've really tailed off in my theatrical viewings. Back then, I'd see a couple dozen films in theaters a year. This decade, I've probably seen 9 or 10 new releases total.

This is why Hollywood films are so geared to the teenage audience. People 16-20 may not go as much as we used to, but they do go a lot more than we do now.

Same here, though. A whole group of us would routinely migrate to the theatre on weekends and sometimes 2-4 times a week during summer vacations. Now, I barely get to a theatre once in a month, if even.

It was limited in '98 and expanded in '99... I remember because I saw it the first week it was out, which was also on the opening night of Office Space.

Looks like 1999 wins for me. 27 films that I felt were at least above average to me. Would I own all of them on DVD? No. Have my tastes changed. Yeah.

I'm not gonna participate in ranking movies at the moment, but I had some fun taking a trip down memory lane by looking at all those movies that came out back in the day:

However, and I might as well quote Kanye on this, "The Wiki doesn't care about black and latino people!"

Some movies that are missing from those lists:

The Show
Hav Plenty
(Underrated)
Tales From The Hood
Mi Familia
Rhyme and Reason
The Perez Family
The Players Club

No argument. LisaRaye was always ugly to me anyway.

BTW (Regarding those black/latino movies again) I could've sworn that I Like It Like That was a '95-'96 movie, but IMDB says it was '94. Hmmph.

Their marketing / brown guilt still gets me to want to see them (stuff like El Cantante or Illegal Tender). But I know they're stupid so I largely am able to resist them.

I stand halfway corrected. One more reason to vote 1999.

well this explains B*A*P*S glaring omission! And yes "ugh" because that may be one of the worst films I have ever seen in the theater.

Re: Rank 'Em as You Saw 'Em: Late 1990s

I'm going by Box Office Mojo's yearly lists. They only list the Top 50 (and I've seen more than what I'm listing), but it clearly shows how awful my tastes were when I was younger. I've seen a lot of shit theatrically, both in my younger days and now.

1995: [10 years old]
Batman Forever
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Goldeneye
Jumanji
Casper
Congo
Mortal Kombat
Babe
The Brady Bunch Movie
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (thanks Mom)

1996: [11 years old]
Independence Day
Twister
Mission: Impossible
Ransom
The Nutty Professor
Phenomenon
The First Wives Club (thanks again Mom)
Scream
Space Jam
The Cable Guy
Mars Attacks!
Matilda
Daylight

1997: [12 years old]
Titanic
Men In Black
The Lost World
Liar Liar
Good Will Hunting
Tomorrow Never Dies
George of the Jungle
Scream 2
Flubber
I Know What You Did Last Summer
Dante's Peak
Anaconda
In & Out
Jungle 2 Jungle
Spawn
Starship Troopers
Volcano
Bean

1998: [13 years old]
Armageddon
There's Something About Mary
The Waterboy
Deep Impact
Godzilla
The Rugrats Movie
Stepmom (thanks again Mom, goddamnit)
The Wedding Singer
Blade
Lost in Space
Halloween: H20
Small Soldiers
The Faculty

1999: [14 years old]
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
The Sixth Sense
Austin Powers in The Spy Who Shagged Me
The Matrix
Big Daddy
The Blair Witch Project
The Green Mile
The World Is Not Enough
Analyze This
American Pie
Sleepy Hollow
The Haunting
Deep Blue Sea
She's All That
Three Kings
South Park - Bigger, Longer and Uncut
House on Haunted Hill

Yeah, by far, 1999; just based off the lists above.
