Law Abiding Citizen(2009)(F.Gary Gray) Revenge Actioner w/ Gerard Butler & Jamie Foxx
I think this looks really good and fun.
Directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off, The Negotiator, A Man Apart, The Italian Job, Be Cool)
Written By Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium , UltraVilolet, Street Kings, Sphere)
"The plot focuses on a man who, ten years after his wife and daughter are brutally murdered, returns to extract justice from the assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case against their killers. His vengeance threatens not only the man who allowed mercy to supersede justice, but also the system and the city that made it so."
Very good trailer is here: http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/08/13/...movie-trailer/

Rated R For strong bloody brutal violence and torture, a scene of rape, and pervasive language.

Film has its moments, but overall it feels like something from the 80s. Sadly for F. Gary Gray (an immensely nice man) I think this will come and go fairly quickly.

I don't get the excitement. I saw the trailer and it looks like direct-to-video crap but with A-list talent. I'm actually tempted soley because of Butler and Foxx. Put some no-names in it and I wouldn't even consider it.

I'm cautiously optimistic... The Negotiator looked like nothing special but because of the strengths of the cast and F. Gary Gray's direction, it really worked. Hoping this would be in a similar vein.

Gray seems to be at around 50% with me.
I liked Friday, The Negotiator, and The Italian Job remake... wasn't so keen on A Man Apart or Be Cool or Set It Off (tho I didn't "dislike" this one all that much), he's actually not a bad gun for hire, just needs a decent script and solid actors. The Screenwriter, Kurt Wimmer (of Equilibrium and Ultraviolet fame) is similarly hit and miss ... mostly miss (Ultraviolet, Sphere, The Recruit, Street Kings.)

Having attended a preview screening, I'll say that while Law Abiding Citizen is one of the worst titles for a thriller in recent memory, Gerard Butler really sells the movie as a great badass.
Like The Negotiator it loses steam in the third act, but it is still a good thriller overall.
They could have cast anyone in the Jamie Foxx role, as his character isn't anything special.
My take: a low-end *** out of ****.

Saw it. Liked it. Completely unrealistic plot but I'm OK with that and thought it was a fun ride. It had what is likely THE MOST unexpected kill scenes I've ever witnessed. The whole (full) theater let out a scream when it happened.

True, nice unexpected kill scene (though I half-expected it, so maybe half-nice). The overall film could have been better, but for a thriller in the "man against the legal machine" genre, none of the 3 sides: wronged man (Gerard Butler's character), prosecutor willing to cut deals to maintain high conviction rate (Jamie Foxx's character), and bad guys(some generic bad guy actors) in this film are all that likable, so you just end up watching how it'll pan out without much investment in the wronged guy due to the extremes he goes to make a point.
I give it 2 stars, or a grade of C.

So far Gerard Butler's career is flowing down in a river of mediocrity. Very cliche movie with a few cool kill scenes, but no substance. I'd Give it a B- to a C, I can't really place it right now.

I thought the movie had a great first 2 acts but the final one kinda fell apart. It was still a fun, but unrealistic ride. I recommend it!

That's almost exactly how I felt about the film. It was much better than even the trailers suggested for the first two acts, but the plot in the last act stretched credulity beyond the limits. The actors certainly held up their end, but they were let down by the script, which came up with a really dumb way to explain away the clever conundrum which was the crux of the film. I'd still recommend it, though, because it was a well-acted, visceral ride whose failings couldn't drag the movie down totally.

I enjoyed the movie. It seemed like a kind of Lex Luther in Death Wish type vibe. I understand the need to suspend belief in movies like this and I was more than willing to until the final scene. There is no way it would play out like that.
