Too bad Hangover finally dropped out of the top 10 in week 10 of its release. It had a great run though.

Little to no marketing? You must not watch TV. I've seen no less than one commercial per hour for it.

Right now they want to ease into the DVD marketing for college students to buy it for Fall semester. It has had a great run though. Probably my second favorite movie of the summer behind Star Trek.

Admittedly, I DON'T watch much tv. A couple hours a week, max

I have yet to see a commercial on TV, hear an ad on radio or see any print ads for this film

It's featured on the cover of the new Entertainment Weekly with the followling headline: "Why District 9 Will Blow Your Mind - All About The Must-See Movie Of The Summer"

If you drive around town you'd have to be blind to miss all the stupid "THIS BUS STOP IS FOR HUMANS ONLY!" and other stuff like that.

Depends where you live, I've seen pretty much no advertising for D9. Until I saw Hurt Locker last week, I had never seen the trailer for District 9 played anywhere.

I haven't seen any around Orange County.

I've seen TV Spots for District 9, but they're awfully forgettable. I have a hard time believing the average joe who see's it comes away remembering what the movie was.

I agree with this - I have friends who are pretty movie savy and when I brought up how hyped I am for District 9 on Friday, all I got was blank stares. People who have seen the ads mostly have no idea what the fuck this movie is, so I'm not sure it'll open huge. I have no doubt that word of mouth will be fantastic and drive it to great overall numbers, but out of the gate, I don't think it'll blow the roof off the joint...

are you sure you've seen the newer ones? they look like a fantastic mix of sci-fi and action. definitely not forgettable, imho. in fact, i'd say outside of the dark knight trailers last year, it's the one that has most piqued my interest in a movie in quite some time.

Other than a trailer I saw before The Hangover, I've only seen one TV spot for it. No posters, no bus stop ads (and there are a lot around here), no displays in theaters.

D9 isn't going to break any records. I'd be surprised on 20+ opening.

Even a 20 million opening week would be great for this movie, as the reported budget is just 30 million.

Why are all these movies with "9" in the title opening this year? Is there a numerologist out there who can enlighten us?

I saw a quick one on MTV that flashed a big DISTRICT 9 and seemed to focus on the large alien ship, but it felt more like generic sci-fi rather then what the original trailer had, which made it all look like a pseudo-documentary, which turned me off from the movie.

Same here. First ad I saw for the movie was before Hurt Locker.

Because it's been advertised to a certain demographic.

I saw comic shops with the D-9 poster a couple of months ago. So perhaps you're just not seeing them because they weren't marketing it to you.

Re: Box Office 8/7-8/9: G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra $lithers to the Top

G.I. Joe earned $6.4m yesterday and has a 4-day total of $61m.

Fantastic Four and Incredible Hulk both had very similar openings. Both of them made $6m on their first Monday. FF and Hulk had similar 2nd weekend drops, but FF had stronger legs and finished with almost $155m in the US. With not nearly as much competition, I think G.I. Joe can mirror FF's take. I think it can end with a similar amount.
