He came across as a man who viewed the Baroness as his woman.

Which agent was Zartan? I figure'd it was Zartan walking in to the room. Maybe I was zoning or something at that part but when we got the resolution before the credits started rolling I figure'd it was him that walked in.

Zartan wasn't the one agent. The agent was one of those non-feeling thugs that Cobra Commander created. Zartan enters the room and his face is not shown, but they have transformed him to look like The President.

Gotcha .. thanks ... I knew that they showed the symbol on the neck, but Zartan also had that symbol.

At that point though it was revealed that was the mark of their soldiers. The one that disintegrated in the crash in Paris had one, too.

No, it wasn't.

That was the 20th Viper. Zartan was waiting in the trap door

Just got back... and I must say that I liked it. I voted 4½-stars.

I was afraid that my childhood memories were gonna get raped... but I like how they pulled it off.

I was okay with the cast, except for Covergirl (can't act) and Ripcord (I can't stand Marlon Wayans)... and I didn't mind the original story aspect of it.

I'd gladly see it again in the theaters and will be getting the BD first day.

Did they anyone actual call her Covergirl in the movie? Beyond the end credits I mean. Cos they could easily recast the character. She was about as nondescript as the standard grunts that were dispatched when the Baroness, Storm Shadow, and Zartan invaded the Pit. To be honest, she was so barely there that I can't even comment on her acting. I know she spoke to General Hawk but I don't remember a word of what she said.

And yes, they did refer to her as "Covergirl." Right at the very start. At least I thought I heard it.

^ I didn't like that scene. Not because of what happened but because of how it was set up.
Spoiler:
Her looking over the shoulder to Zartan walking with the cap held low looked rather awkward. I get that they were showing how well he pretended to be a Joe grunt but I would have prefered had she never taken notice of his presense. It would have been less obvious that way.

Re: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Sommers, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

Concerning sequels:

1. The Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow story was left incomplete - since the movie gets as far as both characters thinking that the other one killed the Hard Master. Storm Shadow is not really a villain - he's not even a villain in the movie, just an angry bad-ass - he's just jealous and pissed off at Snake Eyes for very good reasons. Hopefully in the sequel, Dr. Mindbender will create Serpentor (Stephen Sommers can do a cool Serpentor - he did the Mummy movies don't forget) and bring Storm Shadow back to life, just like in the comics. And they will fight some more, and then both discover that Zartan killed the Hard Master, they will kill Zartan, and then Storm Shadow will join G.I. Joe and those two can be happy brothers instead of bickering fighting brothers.

2. Who gives a shit about Cover Girl. She doesn't need to return. Scarlett and Baroness are the two females that's only needed in the G.I. Joe universe. Maybe Jinx will have a bigger role in the sequel. And Lady Jaye should join in as well.

3. Bring on Major Bludd, Tomax and Xamot, and Firefly for the next bunch of sidekick villains. I would like to see the Dreadknocks, but Zartan doesn't really need them - Zartan is a loner and can kick ass by himself.

Other things about this movie:

1. Sgt. Stone was just a piss-poor replacement of Sgt. Slaughter. It would have been awesome if Fraser just played the new Sgt. Slaughter, but no so.

2. Recast Destro! Let Joseph Levitt Hewitt play him instead and recast Cobra Commander. The voice of Cobra Commander sounded more like Destro's voice.

3. I really hope that Cobra Commander fish bowl thing was just a temporary helmet. They made him vain in the film (wearing a wig is a sign of vanity), so maybe Cobra Commander will have many different outfit changes.

Back in my day GI Joes were 12" action figures that fought in WWII. There were German, Japanese, and Russian figures from what I remember. After that I remember they were trying to make them less warlike and that's when they became astronauts and jungle adventurers.

I was really, really hoping for a Sgt. Slaughter cameo. I hope I wasn't the only one.

Re: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Sommers, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

Sgt. Slaughter would have been awesome but I associate him so much with the wrestler that I was cool with him not making the final cut. Though it would have been nice had they mentioned him as a former Joe.

Or, as someone else mentioned, they could have made Brendan Fraser's character Sgt. SLaughter instead of Lt. Stone.

Re: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Sommers, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

I thought it was a pretty cool action movie. Enjoyed it alot more than Transformers and even Terminator. However, there was way too much CGI. Thought I was watching Star Wars at several points.

Loved Snake Eyes and enjoyed his backstory. Probably one of the most badass characters I've seen recently. Although I agree that it needed some more fleshing out and felt incomplete. I thought Channing Tatum did a very commendable job as Duke. I think he's at the right age where he could definitely reprise the role in several more sequels.

I honestly didn't really care for Cobra Commander and Destro. They either need to be recasted or the writers of the next film need to come up with a stronger villain.

I don't think you need to be a fan of the toys or 80's action figures to like this movie. If you enjoy fun and sometimes dumb action films with lots of special effects, then you will have an appreciation for this.

Read only if you want your theatre experience completely ruined:

Spoiler:
Did anyone else find the anti-piracy Cap Code to be especially annoying in this movie? Between the "weaponizing" of the warheads and the ensuing chase in Paris, the print I saw flashed those brown dots three times in 40 seconds!

Re: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Sommers, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

So, this movie was completely awful. The updating was pointless, the characters were caricatures, and the dialogue was wretched. But it was still better than Transformers 2, and there were three genuinely awesome things in it:

Spoiler:
1. Ninja in a jetpack
2. A British President of the United States
3. Dr. Mindbender!

Random thoughts:

Channing Tatum was lifeless and boring. You know you have a problem when a 30-second cameo by Brendan Fraser completely upstages your main actor.

I like how even in Japanese the Master speaks in broken English.

Speaking of which, I was really hoping that when Snake Eyes did away with Storm Shadow, they would have cut to him in close-up and he'd say: "Top of class" in a really gruff voice.

What's with the spoilers in a review thread. We've all seen the movie people. Those who haven't can suck it. Yo Joe!

According to Deadline Hollywood, GIJOE did 22 million on Friday.

http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/

Another site reporting the same estimate:

Good on Joe if it can do $60M this weekend

Whew good to see some more sources quote the 22. Looks like Sommers will be back to work soon.

Good! It deserves to do so much better than TF2 but I have no faith in the public anymore. Glad that a good chunk of people turned out though.

Re: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Sommers, 2009) — The Reviews Thread

3 stars.

The movie is insultingly stupid on many levels, but I have to admit it was fun. Not as much fun as I was hoping it would be, because there is a lot of bad dialogue/scenes/CGI, but I was def entertained. The fights between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow (esp. the first) were worth the price of admission alone. SS better come back for the sequel. Channing Tatum is a terrible actor. Marlon Wayans looked good next to him if that says anything. I dug Joseph G-L as Cobra, very maniacal in a Darth Vader meets I, Madman kinda way.
