Re: Couples Retreat (Billingsley, 2009): Vince Vaughn and John Favreau ensemble comed

Maybe Favreau should just stick with making superhero movies now.

I sincerely hope that this is just a fluke and Vaughn and Favreau have not lost their touch. Not that poor reviews have hurt Vaughn in the past; Four Christmases made huge money and was universally panned.

Went and saw this today and enjoyed it. The product placement was pretty blatant for Guitar Hero and Applebee's though. There are a few scenes in the trailer that are missing in the movie such as Kristen Davis having sex with her trainer in the van and Jon Favreau with the bartender. Were these cut to make it PG-13??

God have mercy on your soul.

These scenes were already cut at the test screening I saw in August. I thought they got rid of them to make the Davis and Favreau more likable. The film got sent to the MPAA about two weeks after the test screening I attended and got the PG-13 on appeal from an original R. Those scenes were long gone before they went to the board.

Saw this last night. Thought the movie was boring, the talks with the therapists were complelty lame. Scenes with just the guys were pretty enjoyable though

So disappointing... started off really good, but then took a nose dive pretty quickly and crashed and burned. I still find it funny when the girls take their clothes off their all hot and the guys are all well, the exact opposite.

This had a few laughs, but not enough to salvage a lot of boring and pointless footage. The screenplay commits the cardinal sin of not building up characters and the result is a set of very underwhelming arcs and resolutions in the final act.

I give it 2 stars, or a grade of C.

Re: Couples Retreat (Billingsley, 2009): Vince Vaughn and John Favreau ensemble comed

My daughter works at the theater so we can get in free. I decided to give this movie a try and wasn't disappointed. Don't get me wrong. This is not a recommendation of a great movie. I just don't think it deserves all the flack it's getting.

Pros:
Beautiful people
Funny people
Gorgeous location
Some good funny moments

Cons:
No originality
Could have used some more buildup of characters like Patman said.

I give it a C+

When this gets released I'll give it another spin as a rental.

Welcome to sitcom land. Wives are hot, guys are not.

OK so it wasn't great, but it was better than this group Rotten Tomatoes Worst 100 Movies of the Past 10 Years

Re: Couples Retreat (Billingsley, 2009): Vince Vaughn and John Favreau ensemble comed

I watched this with my gf this past weekend, and while it certainly wasn't anything special, it had a laugh or two in it. There is absolutely no excuse for the idiotic Guitar Hero bit, one of my least favorite scenes I've ever seen in a movie in my entire life, but if you ignore that I think this one is "ok". I wont ever watch it again, it's a once watch film at best, but I didn't hate it with a passion like I do with a lot of films like this. It wasn't anywhere near as horrible as All About Steve for example.

There was more that I disliked about this one than just the Guitar Hero scene obviously, but I just don't have it in me to put in the effort to tear a film like this one apart.

Re: Couples Retreat (Billingsley, 2009): Vince Vaughn and John Favreau ensemble comed

The beginning of this movie was better than I thought it would be - Vince Vaughn was on and the kids were funny... then they hit the retreat and the movie came to a complete halt, providing only 2 or 3 marginal laughs (from Vaughn) and a whole lot of BORING. Favreau on his own is creepy and unlikeable. Kristin Davis has nothing to do. Bateman and Bell, who I normally love, bring this movie to it's knee's more than once with their horrible scenes and I wanted to kill myself by the time Faizon Love's wife shows up. The exposition scene after scene about BORING SHIT was endless. None of the jokes were very funny, the yoga bit was UNINSPIRED and the talking about NOTHING/PLOT was endless (and the plot is easy to follow, they just hammer everything again and again and again...we fucking get it). Tedious.

Pic from the movie's premiere. Wish they would kiss already!

I kept expecting Malin Akerman to spout some of the insanity she did in Heartbreak Kid. This was so tame it gave her almost nothing to do.

F me like a black guy Eddie!

^This movie made The Heartbreak Kid look like a comedic masterpiece.

Another example of how this movie wasted talent.

The wife and I saw this today. It was her pick in return for my subjecting her to nothing but horror this month. She seemed to enjoy it but I really didn't care for it. I was expecting a lot more than what I got. I really didn't find myself laughing at all. Just an occasional chuckle. The yoga scene drew a lot of laughs from the theater but to me it just felt corny and pretty lame.

The only parts where I truly laughed were the scenes with Vince Vaughn's youngest son. That kid was funny.

I had to laugh at the first sentence of The Boston Phoenix's review: "Couples, retreat!"
