Universal Soldier: Regeneration - 2009 (Van Damme, Lundgren)

According to IGN this just finished filming. I had read rumors for a while, but didn't know it was this far along.

April 20, 2009 - Elite soldiers Luc Deveraux and Andrew Scott are back from the dead. Again.

IGN Movies has your exclusive first look at the upcoming Universal Soldier: A New Beginning. In the sequel to the 1992 film that created their iconic characters, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren return as fight-to-the-death enemies in Universal Soldier: A New Beginning.

Scott and Deveraux were special forces soldiers in Vietnam who were killed and brought back to life decades later to fight harder, faster and better than ever.

Universal Soldier: A New Beginning was directed by John Hyams. The film recently wrapped principal photography in Bulgaria.

Plot:

A crazed Chechen nationalist, Basayev, seizes control of Chernobyl, site of the infamous nuclear meltdown, and threatens to unleash a radioactive cloud unless his nationalist blackmail demands are met.

Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) joins a U.S. team of revived UniSoldiers secretly held in deep storage. Their mission: retake Chernobyl and disable explosives that will unleash the radioactive clouds. Luc is surprised when he finds one of the reactivated UniSoldiers is a clone of his old Sergeant, Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren). But the cloned Andrew has no recollection of Luc.

As the team furiously battles its way into the Chernobyl plant, they are caught off guard. Using a mind-control chip, Baseyev turns Andrew against his own comrades. Now surrounded, wounded, and out-numbered, Luc must battle Andrew, and save the world.

I loved the first one, and The Return wasn't bad. I just hope its not too cheapy, but its probably DTV.

Really?

I might check it out if it's on HBO HD or something. I normally would have just written this right off, but with JCVD and The Expendables, suddenly I care about these two a little more.

re: Universal Soldier: Regeneration - 2009 (Van Damme, Lundgren)

Some more news from Wiki:

Siomon Fellows was originally set to direct but was replaced by John Hyams shortly before production began. P.J. Pesce was also considered to direct at one point. Filming began in February 2009 on a $15,000,000 budget, in Bulgaria.[1] Dolph Lundgren allegedly filmed all his scenes in just 5 days, while Van Damme filmed his in 20 days.[2] The film will be released in a currently unspecified date in 2009, and it is currently unclear whether it will be released thearatrically or straight to DVD.

The director John Hyams is the son of Timecop director Peter Hyams.

-----------------

The new "Universal Soldier" flick isn't going direct-to-DVD after all. Because of the involvement of Van Damme and Lundgren, Sony will be releasing it theatrically. This will be Van Damme's second theatrical release in twelve months (the other being "J.C.V.D") - that's quite a leap forward for the Muscles from Brussels!

------
I think this has a lot to do with JCVD, and Lundgren being cast in The Expendables. But hmm 5 days for Dolph. I hope he has a decent amount of screen time.

I still enjoy the hell out of Universal Soldier. It's not high art (nor does it pretend to be) but boy was it a lot of fun!

SequelS actualy. There were two or three DTV sequels before the theatrical release of Universal Soldier: The Return. They all looked crappy so I avoided watching them.

I hope this lates film is good and I hope Dolph Lundgren gets plenty of screentime. But change the subtitle. I dunno why but calling it A New Beginning rubs me the wrong way.

Holy crap. Where the hell did this come from? I thought it was still only in the rumor stages. I don't care if it's DTV or Theatrical, I cannot wait to see this.

LOL at casting Andrei Arlovski (former UFC Heavyweight Champ) as a UniSol. This is going to be awesome!

The film is also called "Universal Soldiers: The Next Generation," according to quite a few websites. Not that it is much better, if any, than "A New Beginning," but...

re: Universal Soldier: Regeneration - 2009 (Van Damme, Lundgren)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't this be the THIRD attempt at a Universal Soldier 2, or is this one following The Return?

re: Universal Soldier: Regeneration - 2009 (Van Damme, Lundgren)

Id say it follows Return, so #3 in the true 'in continuity' sequence. Return did not follow the 2 VHS/Direct to TV sequels with Jeff Wincott and Burt Reynolds (Universal Soldier II and III)

In order of production:

Universal Solider
Universal Solider II (ignored by Return)
Universal Solider III (ignored by Return)
Universal Solider The Return
Universal Solider A New Beginning

Universal Solider II/Universal Solider III for only $2 new....

Nothing special but they were decent for being direct to DVD IMO....

They should have just called it 'Universal Soldier' - like the Fast & The Furious did.
