I have to disagree. It was predictable, but I don't think the point of the ending was to shock you. I saw it as more of an homage to the original film. Maybe some people not familiar with the series got that one last scare, but for fans I saw it as a wink for our dedication to the series.

Re: Friday the 13th (2009) — The Reviews Thread

Really enjoyed this one. Nice way to (hopefully) start off a new series of films. I only hope that they listen to the fans and make a winter-set sequel.

Now, my question regards the placement of the
Spoiler:
totem poles in the woods .. My first thought is that these weren't part of the camp (as the entrance was farther away) and that they were put there to give the future of the series a way to put the supernatural Jason in play.

Any thought?

Re: Friday the 13th (2009) — The Reviews Thread

I just got back from seeing the movie and I was definitely impressed and overall I was pretty happy with the end product

Spoiler:
Jason was humanized a lot more than in the original movies, but i thought the hockey trophy's in his bedroom were a little cheesy to show why he liked the hockey mask so much. The beginning of the movie moves so damn fast with the decapitation of his mother and I would of liked a little more of that storyline, then it jumps right into a new group of kids (with some great comedy moments) with Jason (cloth mask) killing them all off before the main title appears and then he picks up the hockey mask and then starts the main storyline with another group of kids.

The main thing I didn't like was whenever Jason was killing or chasing someone the camera work was soooooo shakey and it really gives you a headache but it is also hard to see exactly what was going on as the overall look of the movie is really dark, I would of liked some brightness added so I could get a better look at his kills. Jason was so angry and brutal which I really loved. I can't wait for the uncut DVD to come out because some of the kills were pretty gruesome

Any thought?[/quote]

It was decent, but I dont understand all love for this compared to all the hatred of Rob Zombie's Halloween, which was much better IMHO.

also... what about the classic score !!??

I actually don't know anybody who will publicly admit they enjoyed Zombie's Halloween.

And I am still shocked that MBV is still getting so much love. That movie was as interesting as me painting a wall for 90 minutes.

Re: Friday the 13th (2009) — The Reviews Thread

Really enjoyed Friday the 13th. I thought Nispel and Bay once again collaborated on another solid re-make. Lots of freking suspenseful and jump out of your seat moments. I also thought the acting was surprisingly solid. Jared Padalecki was a solid choice for the lead in this film. I liked My Bloody Valentine, but I thought this was overall a much more suspenseful and better structured film. I thought they did a good job casting the supporting parts.

I thought it was funny that:

Danielle Panabaker's boyfriend was blantantly banging the other chick with the door closed and she didn't even seem to care while pounding on the door. What did she think they were doing behind closed doors? Playing Uno or Yahtzee?

Re: Friday the 13th (2009) — The Reviews Thread

Okay I'm a little rusty on my Friday the 13th history, but did Jason drown as a boy in the late 1960's-1970's in the original film?

I did think it was interesting that they made the opening scene with Jason's Mom take place in 1980 Camp Crystal Lake which was in the timeline of the 1st movie. It felt somewhat like an homage to the original film.

I'm a little rusty on my Jasontology as well, but I thought he originally died in the 50s.

Seeing it again, the one thing I forgot to mention before is that Juliana Guill is the hottest naked girl in any of the Friday the 13ths, IMO.

Which is important to mention.

Re: Friday the 13th (2009) — The Reviews Thread

It was pretty much what a modern-day Friday the 13th movie should be, and while certain things may not match up to my nostalgic best-case-scenarios, I can't really complain too much. Sure, it had some flaws... the reenactment of the events of the 1980 film was too short and presented in an annoying way. And while I dig the idea of Jason having a 'place', some of those scenes felt a bit more Texas Chainsaw Massacre than Friday the 13th to me.

Overall, this reboot reminded me, in a strange way, of Casino Royale and Batman Begins... taking a franchise that had fallen into silliness (Jason X/TWINE/Batman & Robin) and making it relevant again. And I have to admit, it actually felt kind of nice to watch this in an audience full of teens who were being scared by Jason again, screaming and laughing at the right parts.

Re: Friday the 13th (2009) — The Reviews Thread

It was almost exactly what I expected. I had pretty high hopes and am just glad I wasn't disappointed with it. I do wish they would have started with the camp being open. I always liked the storyline of the camp either being open or being re-opened by someone after the killings (which could happen in a sequel).

Spoiler:
It kind of bugged me that they supposedly killed the killer and rather than leave his body where it was and report it they decided to lug it down to the lake and dump it. That really made no sense at all to me.

I can't believe no one has caught this gigantic plothole (I don't know how to do those spoiler tag thingies):

In the beginning, Jason kills the first group of kids. Whitney tripped and was crawling backwards. Jason runs and lunges his machete into her then main title. A half an hour later, she tied up in his catacombs. Um...huh? Did he miss?

Re: Friday the 13th (2009) — The Reviews Thread

There was a lot that didn't work for me. The look of the film was too much like Nispel's TCM remake, and didn't feel like an east coast based film. Jason's decision to pick up the hockey mask had no thought behind it. You could delete the opening segment where Pam gets beheaded because it had no bearing on what happens after. The score. My plot hole comment in my above post. No Camp Crystal Lake, all it was was a sign; there wasn't anything specific about it. I really wanted them to give it that summer camp feel instead of the TCM part 3 feel it had.

I just didn't vibe with it. When I saw the trailer I was stoked as all hell. After seeing it, I was vastly disappointed and now think Nispel was the wrong choice to direct it. Anyone else sick of the look of the Platinum Dunes remakes? I scared as shit for the Nightmare on Elm Street now....

Re: Friday the 13th (2009) — The Reviews Thread

I would have to say that the movie was mildly entertaining but at the same time it was somewhat of a disappointment. They made Jason far more than what he should be. He is far too intelligent and has too many things at his disposal which makes no sense. Plus, his name carved onto his bed was a bit cheesy. I thought that some of the kills were ok but the overall feel of the movie was a bit too much like the TCM remake. Hell, if you look at the poster of this movie and the one of TCM it looks like they just replaced Leatherface and his chainsaw with Jason and his machete (that is as long as Leatherface's chainsaw in the remake). I will say that the preview of The Last House on the Left looks like the movie will be more entertaining than this was.

I thought it was a bit strange that she had no reaction at all, but then I guess when see a giant in a hockey mask carrying a beheaded body you have other things to worry about.

I don't understand how you can say that his mother's beheading had no bearing on what happened later.
1. Jason's entire motivation for killing is because of this.
2. The entire plot of him keeping one person alive was because she reminded him of his mother.
3. The scene where they found the head in the wall would be very confusing had they not had the opening scene. Just some random head in a wall???

I think you might be right. Besides MBV's nudity the first movie in a long time (barring The Wrestler, of course) where I wished I had a pause button handy.

Spoiler:
She has perfect nipple placement.

That is the assumption, yes. But the movie mad no references to Whitney being a look alike to Pamela. We know, because we're deep F13 fans. Even still, with your argument, how did Jason not whack her in the opening credits? I guess I wanted the filmmakers to explore this angle more other than "hoping" we got it. Pam needed to be in the movie more, case closed.

They missed some golden opportunities here. Biggest one is if Pam went crazy cuz the kids weren't watching Jason, she assumes he's dead. Jason isn't and watched the beheading. Cool, why is he alive and not in the lake?

The locals were irritating. There's no "it's got a death curse" line, rendering the existence of the camp mute. F13 was all about summer camp; this wasn't Camp Blood, just Camp weed farm and Jason loves his dope.

It might sound like I'm over-thinking this, I'm not. I love F13, but I stand by my thoughts here as this was a missed opportunity. I do hope the assured sequel address this more.

They made a reference to their similar appearances in Jason's cabin when she found the locket. Her boyfriend said "You look just like her, you should keep it".

As for "how did Jason not whack her in the opening credits" I am assuming you mean Jason not killing the woman that beheaded his mother. I would say because he was only a child. First, he would most likely not have the strength. Second, he's already mentally slow and probably didn't understand what he was seeing straight away. This was the point that everything stemmed from, he wasn't a serial killing before this incident.
