Land of the Lost - *** - I hate to say it but I really enjoyed the flick. Not the best made movie, but worth a watch or two. Altered state recommended.

Orphan - *** - Very entertaining thriller with a horrible plot twist on paper that somehow works in the movie.

Up (Pixar, 2009) - *** - One of Pixar's more entertaining movies, it was hurt a bit of the restraints of expectations. The movie was basically two films in one, an emotional "life left unfulfilled" flick and a Saturday morning cartoon. The emotional stuff is well handled if a little top heavy, and the Saturday Morning Cartoon stuff was a touch mediocre (the overuse of dogs and a weak bad guy don't help.) Simply put, I would have preferred more of the "adult" stuff.

Taken (Pierre Morel, 2008) - *** - An exciting if ultra generic action/thriller with Liam Neeson flatout owning the picture. Very glad this is one of the top grossers of 2009 thus far.

I Love You, Man (John Hamburg, 2009) - *** - Bromantic comedy, some very funny bits but it plays it a little too safe

Watchmen (Zack Snyder, 2009) - *** - A solid, ocassionally entertaining recreation of the graphic novel in movie form. That said, it was more a recreation of panels than an actual movie, and while it worked brilliantly in places, it was overall lacking.

GI Joe - ** 1/2 - Silly fun.
Knowing (Alex Proyas, 2009) - ** 1/2 - Excellent ideas, solid visuals, and occasionally deft direction couldn't save this movie from itself. For every amazingly directed sequence, there was a forehead slapper to go with it. A disappointment based on how excellent it could have been.

My Bloody Valentine 3D (Patrick Lussier, 2009) - ** 1/2 - The movie itself was nothing special, but the application of 3D made it a howler in the theaters. Nice to have a movie every once in a while where everything unravels the way you would initially think, but then doubt since nothing could be that obvious. As a movie itself, 2, with 3D, a 3.

Angels & Demonds (Howard, 2009) - ** - Dull plot with a great potential story. The movie is more a Humanities lecture than a piece of cinema. Great acting by McGregor, nicely shot and directed. Now, if only they could do something interesting with the story. Idiotic ending, too.

Carry overs:
Slumdog Millionaire (Danny Boyle, 2008) - **** - Well paced, highly entertaining fairy tale about two kids growing up in the slums of Mumbai and pursuing their ideas of destiny. A little contrived but ultimately uplifting.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Woody Allen, 2008) - *** - An interesting look at living the life you're supposed to live, equal parts Woody Allen classic and standard issue romantic dramedy.

Bolt (Byron Howard, Chris Williams, 2008) - ** - Very well animated movie with a novel idea (Sunset Blvd, Doggie-style) it just couldn't hold my interest.
