Also...somewhat off topic: Whatever happened to the Lawsuit against ZINDA, aka India's Illegal remake of Oldboy?

Sound is a bit off but whatever...

According to Wikipedia, the Oldboy producers "considered" a lawsuit, but it doesn't look like they ever actually filed one.

From that clip, it looks like a lawsuit may not have been filed because Oldboy is so clearly the superior product.

With Charlize Theron on board for the Sympathy for Lady Vengeance remake and the Oldboy remake apparently coming along, I can't help but wonder if Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance will get a re-do, which is actually the only one that I think could actually use a remake (I enjoyed the story in the original, but the direction was a bit lackluster (pacing, lacked suspense, didn't feel a thing for any of the characters, etc; ), Park improved big time with the two follow-ups.)

I'd love to see this get made with the original ending. And if it didn't have the original ending, it wouldn't be an Oldboy remake, it would be just another movie where someone fucked with a guy. Why couldn't Smith be great in this?

Turns out they are adapting the manga, not the movie. If this is true, the second half of the movie will be drastically different from Chan-wook Park's version.

Ever since hearing the terrible Spielberg/Smith news, I've been trying to think of an actor that I could actually see in the lead role to no avail. But Mortensen could potentially be awesome. Good call.

I can't find a summary of the manga anywhere... what happens in the original book that differs from the movie?

I would like to take a page from the chris_sc77 book and say that this could only work as an R-rated film.

got this from imdb
Will Smith is in talks to remake a controversial Korean movie that was linked to a U.S. university massacre.

Oldboy, released in 2003, follows a man's violent quest for revenge
Spoiler:
after he was shamed at high school.

South Korean-born Seung-Hui Cho's murder of 32 students at Virginia Tech in 2007 was linked back to the film, after a photograph was found of him recreating a pose from a poster promoting it.

DreamWorks and Universal secured the rights to remake the movie earlier this year, and Smith has confirmed he is interested in recreating the film - although rumours Steven Spielberg will direct have been denied.

did the jackass who wrote this article have to spoil the big twist?

also read this on wikipedia "Smith has clarified Spielberg will not be remaking the film though: he is adapting the manga itself, which lacks the octopus eating and incest from the original."

Uhm that isn't a spoiler. They
Spoiler:
got it backwards. And even then, that doesn't even scratch the surface
of it. And it wasn't linked to the massacre, just linked one picture to the killer. If they were going to go after a potential "influence" they'd be better off attacking A Bittersweet Life. Just crappy reporting all around, trying to pull readers.

It's like how The Matrix was blamed for Columbine. It came out about a month before the shootings and the whole thing stemmed from the lobby shootout, which was more than anything a great action sequence, yet the media completely misunderstood it.

re: Oldboy (2013) (D: Lee; S: Brolin, Olsen, Copley, Jackson)

Will Smith Exclaims ‘Oldboy’ Remake Will Be “Nothing Less Than Stunning”

WAMG reports Will Smith recently spoke with MTV news, and he had this to say about the original Manga’s dark and violent nature.

“It’s the thing that Steven was attracted to. We’re working from the comic and we haven’t done anything other than talk about it. So we’ll see what happens, but he’s not going to do anything that would be less than stunning.”
WHY make this?

I think Spielberg has gone crazy and it may be time to put him down.
I love the man's films but he is going too far. When McG's upcoming slate looks more promising than Spielberg's somethings not quite right. Spielberg's 3 strikes: Indy 4, TinTIn, and This Oldboy remake. Please just make Lincoln Mr. Spielberg. you know you wanna...

Ok...who here has read the comic?!? I'm pretty sure they're going to go with the comic route cuz just from Vol. 1, which came in that awesome 3 Disc Oldboy edition, it wasn't as fucking crazy as the film. It could work..do I want to see it based on who's on it? No...no not really cuz...it's Will Smith playing Mister....

The manga does not end the same way as the movie. So if they are going off the manga, the question of retaining the Korean film's ending isn't relevant.

re: Oldboy (2013) (D: Lee; S: Brolin, Olsen, Copley, Jackson)

The entire reason I like remakes is because it allows for a compare and contrast between directors, it's fun to see how one director visualizes and focuses on something that the other either missed or ignored (and this works both ways).

That said, I'm a bit sad this isn't a remake of the original Oldboy as I wouldn't mind seeing a Spielberg/Smith spin on it. I doubt very seriously it will resemble the original, at all, if they truly do follow the source material instead.
