But the movie was total. Zooey Deschanel can't her way out of a brown bag. Shyamalan did a job at directing it.

Unbreakable is one of my favorite films. M. Night is also one of my favorite film-makers.

Hopefully he can pull through and make a quality sequel to this. But as much as I would love one, if he can't come up with a good story for an "Unbreakable 2" I'd rather him just do something else instead.

And, yeah, I've enjoyed all his films. Including The Happening. The Sixth Sense is still his best though.

I have to say that regardless of how shitty she may be in The Happening, Zooey Deschanel is awesome and a lovely actress.

Your entire post was was nonsensical the minute you typed 'Heroes.'

Either way - I'd love to see a sequel.

Yeah how in the world would it be a copy cat? Doesn't matter how long its been. It was more original than any comic book movie. LOL at heroes....

Re: Shyamalan Considers 'Unbreakable II'

Jim Emerson brought back a quick "scene breakdown" from Unbreakable this week and it reminded me of why I gave any consideration to M. Night outside of his "twists" to begin with.

Four Pieces of Unbreakable from Jim Emerson on Vimeo.

I hope he gets around to making this sequel, and I hope he gets back to doing some memorable, well thought out sequences like these.

Re: Shyamalan Considers 'Unbreakable II'

Poor old M.Night Shyi'maman.

This is a guy forever tagged with the idea of the "twist" ending since he pulled a Twilight Zone on us all with Sixth Sense. His recent movies are complete dogshit, no doubt about it, but he's one of the few auteurs left working behind a camera.

For the record:

Sixth Sense: A stylish, superior thriller with an excellent ending which holds up remarkably well.
Unbreakable: For my money, his best film and one of the most satisfying, rounded comic-book stories a guy like me (a non-comic book reader) could hope for.
Signs: A really rather brilliant and scary film up until the ending, which was not as bad as made out, but could have been handled a million times better for sure.
The Village: Nowhere near as bad as its made out to be.

and then...

Lady In The Water and The Happening. Oh dear.

I agree 100%. I think he has some of the most interesting shot compositions these days and I like the way he uses unfocused backgrounds to heighten tension.

Lady In The Water I generally can't stand, although there's a moment or two that still display that skill. In particular, I'm thinking of the scene when Bryce Dallas Howard pops out of the pool to grab the watch the Paul Giamatti leaves on a chair in the foreground. Ultimately, the biggest problem for me with the film (setting all issues of egotism and casting aside) is that the film is about storytelling and it really sucks at it. Instead of an interesting modern fairy tale, or bedtime story as the ads put it, we got a skeleton of a mythology that mostly involved characters explicitly telling us what the rules of this world were. This is a narf. She can do a,b,c and she can't do x,y,z. And then there are scrunts, etc. etc.

The Happening could have been good. Most of my problems with that film seemed to stem from the fact that it was billed as "Shyamalan's first R-rated film!" A couple scenes,
Spoiler:
the mobile phone video of the lion cage and the runaway lawnmower
felt like he was playing around with his rating freedom. His films have always been better at conveying terror and horror by not showing us things and merely hinting at it. I'm reminded now of the chills I got when Mel Gibson and his kids come across the picture in the UFO book with a dead family on the lawn in front of a house that looks similar to theirs.

Anyway, I'm a fan of his work and look forward to what he comes up with next. I'll almost definitely be seeing his Avatar film because my younger brother is quite a fan of the series. I'd love to see an Unbreakable 2.

Re: Shyamalan Considers 'Unbreakable II'

Unbreakable is the only MNS movie I actually like and would totally be interested in a sequel. I thought the movie was just starting to get going and then it was over. Way more stories to tell in that universe, IMO.

Sadly, I think the absolute best thing for him might be to go back to basics. Make a movie for absolutely no money and just concentrate on story.

Agreed. MNS is fantastic with story (I personally think his last couple were just too hard for him to live up to and he failed miserably). But he's even better with the camera. I can only think of a handful of modern big-budget directors that wield a camera with the precision and thoughtfulness that MNS does. I hope for a big comeback for him.

And I think the best way for him to do that is to focus on smaller, no money pictures, that aim to tell a great story without a twist (to break from that stereotype).
