Oh dear.

Not sure what you mean. Looks quite funny to me. Better than most so-called "comedies" today. Back to Liar, Liar territory. Count me in, but then again, I have no interest in "Tropic Thunder," so perhaps I'm a bit biased.

Carrey's actually never had a comedy that flopped. Closest thing is Cable Guy... a dark comedy that still made 60million...and that was 12 yrs ago.

Yes Man doesn't look great, but I'd see it.

His last film, The Number 23, made 33 million in the U.S. Fun with Dick and Jane made 110 million, but it's budget was 100 million. I don't see this as being the smash hit that makes him a star again. I wish he'd stick to more nuanced performances like Eternal Sunshine than falling back on the safe, broad humor that the trailer seems to suggest.

The Number 23 wasn't a comedy.

Not intentionally so, no. I didn't mean to suggest that Carrey's previous comedies had been flops at all - the thread title just says "next flop". His previous live action film bombed, and I'm predicting this one will as well. His zany antics, like those of Mike Myers, have fallen out of style. People seem to prefer the "regular guy" comedies of Jude Apatow these days.

It kinda looks the retarded mainstream version of Chaos Theory.

Used to love Jim Carrey, as I love Ace, Dumb & Dumber, Cable Guy, but he got soft with Liar Liar. Can't remember the last movie I saw that he was in. Could it be The Majestic in 2001?

Looks pretty funny to me. It has to be better than Dick & Jane.

Eternal Sunshine wasn't exactly a hugh hit ($34m beats The Majestic but pretty ties for his lowest grosser since he struck it big with Ventura). Fun with Dick and Jane was partially an Apatow movie.

He's fine with his niche, unlike Myers he doesn't rely on a social stereotype "character" to pull off his movies.

Also I don't think Myer's style of comedy has fallen out of favor, the Love Guru was just horrendously executed. When your highlight reel (trailer) involved nothing but recycled (from his own, better movies) and extremely extremely broad jokes, it is destined to fail.

Ignore the not great theatrical trailer and go see it anyhow - you won't be disappointed.

Anyhow, I hope The Yes Man will be good and I generally like Jim Carrey, but we'll have to see how this light/tame brand of humour flies in this current marketplace. I'll be there just for Murray 'Ginger Balls' Hewitt

How the hell did a movie like that cost $100 Million? It's been a while since I've seen it, but I don't recall any giant action set pieces. Talk about wasteful studio spending. . .

Doesn't look all that bad to me. Could be pretty funny. I might go see it. Carrey might be a good dramatic actor (at times) but he's still a funny guy when he wants to be.

My guess is that his salary was about 1/3rd of that bill.

Yeah, but you're stretching the logic and that's Artman's point. Jim Carrey in a comedy = money. Jim Carrey in something more serious does not equal money. Kinda like Adam Sandler. Both can succeed in their niches, but they don't really have broad appeal in other genres. Since this is Carrey back in his niche, it'll probably do alright. I don't think Apatow really has any effect on this.

Movie looks alright, nothing special. It will probably end up being extremely mediocre.

Another 1/3rd had to be all the re-shoots that had to go on to put out a "presentable" product.

Jim Carrey is down there with Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy. Will Ferrell's trying hard to get there but he's not there yet.

This looks pretty funny. Definetely a date night movie for my wife and I. Don't know what the OP was smokin'. It looks like a decent solid comedy in the vain of Liar Liar.

The Majestic was a drama. Not received very well, but I thought it was great.

The last comedy I really enjoyed Jim Carrey in was Bruce Almighty. That seemed to return him to the comedy genre, but he's been sputtering ever since.

And this new movie looks pretty insipid...not a very inspired idea to me. I will have to wait to read the reviews.

Looks funny to me. Definitely a rental at the very least.

I enjoy Liar Liar a great deal and this seems to tap the same vibe.

I have no problem with Jim Carrey doing a comedy as long as he commits to it. I felt with Bruce Almighty and Fun With Dick and Jane he was just putting on a face and doing it because it was his schtick. Then The Number 23 was just a horribly executed misfire, and I felt his work in Horton was perhaps trying too hard, but back to the right level of sincerity. This looks both sincere and amusing, if not really fall-down hilarious.
