There is no god - Will Ferrel is Maxwell Smart!

Sigh - is there NO idea that is benieth the notice of Hollywood, no bad idea that they will not stoop to? Is there no old TV show that they will not rape?

Guess not. . . .

GET SMART Will Ferrell!
Former SNL star to play new Agent?

Dateline: Thursday, July 31, 2003

Former SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE cast member Will Ferrell is forging ahead on his burgeoning film career. After scoring a modest hit with OLD SCHOOL and completing filming on ELF, Farrell has now attached himself to star in a possible big screen version of the classic TV comedy series GET SMART. Farrell would play the role of secret agent Maxwell Smart, originally played by Don Adams on the TV show.

Now that Farrell has attached his name to the Warner Bros.-based project, producer Andrew Lazar is shopping the GET SMART movie around town and to prospective screenwriters.

I loved the TV show Get Smart. Probably in my top 5 all time favorite shows. I'll wait until it's actually out before I pass judgment.

"There is no god?" It's not like he's remaking Ikiru.

Get Smart was a fun show but not exactly Holy Writ. I'd bet Ferrell could at least do something interesting with the material.

Interesting funny or Interesting god-awful, it's yet to be seen

So wait a sec... there is a God because Ben and J-Lo won't be making more films together... and now there's not a God because Will Farrell is making Get Smart?

I hate these theological quandries...

And for the most part, under normal conditions, I would too. But lets look at the track record of Hollywood in regards to making TV shows into sucessful movies:

TV-into-movies that Worked:
Star Trek
Waynes World
Naked Gun

TV-into-movies that DIDNT work:
It's Pat
A Night at the Roxbury
The Coneheads
The Avengers
Wild Wild West
I-Spy
Scooby Doo
The Beverly Hillbillies
George of the Jungle
Dudley Do-Right
Car 54, Where Are You?
Dragnet
Lost in Space
And the list goes on. . . .

As you can see - compared to what has come before, the odds of a Get Smart movie sucking ass are pretty big indeed.

Will doesn't annoy me that much...and I was just a casual fan of Get Smart.

But if this bit 'o news shatters your faith in God, this thread'll make you break out the razor blades...

Britney? Anna Nicole Smith?!?

While I'd welcome any chance to see Brit's ass in really short cutoffs - isnt Boss Hogg a short, fat, balding, middle aged white guy?

Sigh - just goes to show you that Hollywood takes every chance it can get to have a hit of the biggest crack pipe on the west coast.

I agree with everything but "George of the Jungle." I thought that was a fun flick.

Night at the Roxbury is one of my guilty pleasure but I thought coneheads and dragnet were decent movies.

anyway I'm not too keen on this idea but I love Will Ferrel so I will probably see it.

What's this about Ferrell "attaching himself" to the project? Is he producing too?

I don't believe quotes that come from sources that spell the same person's name differently in the same article. Ferrell of Farrell? Make up your mind Mr. Sauriol.

I used to watch Get Smart all the time with my Dad when I was a kid. Now that i'm grown and I see the show on TV LAND, I think it sucked. It was a silly show and not that great.

With that said..

Will F. will probably do a great job with the role because he's a great comedic actor.

Does anyone else remember "THE NUDE BOMB"?

Wow. I guess I am the only one who likes Will Ferrell?

Will is a comedic genius, and I can guarantee you that if this movie sucks, they were will be at least 4 funny scenes.

I don't know who this Maxwell Smart fella is, but if he's like the hairy-backed cheerleader guy, this should rock. Ferrell's hilarious.

Nope your not the only one. I adore Will Ferrell. I've watched my DVD copy of Old School about 10 times now since I've bought it and my hard drive is flooded with SNL clips of him.

A Night At The Roxburry - Such a funny movie. That worked very well.
George Of The Jungle - Not exactly classic cinema, but it worked for me.
Wild Wild West - I'm a fan of Will Smith. MIB is one of my favorites.

More that worked you didn't list:
South Park
Beavis & Butt-head
~SNL Flicks~
Ladies Man
Superstar
Wayne's World 2
...and Charlies Angels. It did great at the box office but the sequel sucked.
Blues Brothers

I missed "Dragnet" on that first list.

Chalk that one up as another guilty pleasure.

I love Will, and like people have already said in this thread, Get Smart isn't nearly as beloved as other shows from the era, I would see anything ferrel is staring/involved with in no matter how absurd of a remake or rip-off it is, I have never been let down by his performances

If Mathew Broderick hadn't sucked so bad in Inspector Gadget - I would've thought of him as a better choice for this role. Will is funny, but I don't see him in this part. They could just make a spy movie with Will without calling it Maxwell Smart. That one with Mr. Bean is basically the same thing. I still like the Pink Panther movies best. There's always room for clumsy idiot spy movies... not much to get worked up over.

Ditto that. If Get Smart is anything like Dragnet then I'm there.

Will Ferrell is funny in everything he does. EVERYTHING. Even when the movie sucks (Roxbury, Superstar, etc...) at least his parts are gold.

I don't think Ferrel knows how to play a straight-man, which, if recollection serves, is how Get Smart got most of its laughs in.
