I would rant about about Lee and the trash that Alvin and the Chipmunks was but I would rather state that David Cross, the other dimming star in that turd of a movie, would be a good Gargamel. Sadly he would need a toupee to pull it off.

Re: Smurfs - Live action

^ I still thinks it a combo of both CGI smurfs and live action Gargamel.

honestly though - do American kids even know what a smurf is nowadays??

the current imdb rumour for the role of Gargamel is actor Wallace Shawn - I can see that, kind of... but I'm picturing more... uh Scott (30 Rock) Adsit (with a higher pitched voice)

Live action Smurfs suck, literally. I just recently watched some of the live action smurf porn through a link over on the xcritc site.

Your mention of Wallace Shawn made me go straight to IMDB. That "Actors That You Can't Believe Are Dead" thread made an ass out of me.

Re: Smurfs - Live action

Well, I'm glad to see they didn't take the opportunity to update (read: screw up) the character designs. We don't need any metal, gansta, skater, or emo Smurfs.

Still, I just don't see this working as a movie unless they go for an all out medieval fantasy adventure vibe. Which, despite the setting, isn't for what the show was known.

Re: Smurfs - Live action

It's directed by Raja Gosnell. That alone should tell you how good it could potentially be.

Why would they choose Generic Smurf for the poster? Wouldn't Brainy, Hefty, Papa, Smurfette, or any others who are visually distinctive make more sense?

The Chipmunks franchise had been off the radar for just as long before they relaunched it, and look how that turned out.

Which is exactly why Sony is going forward with this.
