We Own The Night
Well it looks like a decent flick. Since it's coming out tomorrow, Is it worth a blind buy? Or should I just Netflix it? I'm just trying to get some advice/feedback on it. Thanks

Either way, I'll Netflix the Blu version.

One of the worst movies I saw in 2007 IMO...or certainly one that disappointed me a LOT...great potential but horrible execution..and I like Wahlberg, Phoenix and 'The Yards' but thought this one was like a bad TV movie throughout.

Yes, pretty disappointing. It's mostly just because of the average script and direction. It goes from an interesting start, to a decent but forgettable middle, to a meh end. It's pretty much a waste of the cast. Average is the only word I have for it, I can't think of any reason to recommend it really.

^ it's all been said.
Gray does not even scratch the emotional surface in this one. Its especially frustrating to sit through b/c you keep expecting/wanting the excellent cast to spread their wings a bit, but they just don't. This was my biggest disappointment of 2007. At no point during filming, did someone realize what was going on? I mean the potential for this film is so obvious, but instead we get a NYPD marketing video (yay,cops!...boo bad guys!)

It starts of very interesting, but as the movie continues in delves deeper and deeper into action movie cliches until it reaches the final standoff - the very idea of a final standoff in a movie is such a cliche!

This movie is really good up until the drug bust. I think it just falls apart. I wish it was more about Joaquin being undercover (ala The Departed). The scene with him and Wahlberg in the police station was great but everything else was meh. Joaquin Phoenix puts in a flawless performance but it's not enough to carry the film.

We Own the Night is one of the biggest recent disappointments I can recall. The characters seemed cardboard, it's hard to empathize them. The story is made out of thin air, Phoenix character's transition is highly unbelievable. I can't come up with an idea why such great actors as Duvall, Wahlberg and Phoenix wasted their time for this poor film. The only two great scenes it had - a car chase scene and police raid to that drugdealers' den. They were both shot magnificently.

I'd give this movie a 6/10. It started off sooooooo slow. The second half was definitely the best. And yes, the car chase was very good. Was this more intense and entertaining than "The Departed"? That critic has lost his mind. BTW, the music timeline of this film was way off. It's supposed to be in 1988. Most of the music was from 1980-82. Early Blondie, David Bowie's "Let's Dance", etc. Sure, it could have been a "retro" club. But I doubt it. There was also a Boy George look-a-like in the club walking around. Early Boy George that is. No one dressed like that in 1988.

When is 1988 ever mentioned in the film?

bought this used for like $10 and watched it last night, it was decent but nothing spectacular as folks have mentioned.
I also noticed an editing error near the beginning when they are celebrating wahlberg's achievment and cut to joaquin and eva you can clearly see them walking through the crowd before the seen occurs where that should happen.
worth seeing, but not owning is my final answer.

I completely agree with most of the sentiments here...really expected more and was surprised when I came away feeling indifferent to it...man, I wanted to like this movie a lot more than I did...Duvall seemed to be sleepwalking through his role...
