The 2008 Rank 'Em As You See 'Em Thread

Previous Years: 2007 | 2006 | 2005 | 2004 | 2003 | 2002

Here you go... Rate your favorite movies from this year by whatever method or system you desire. If you keep up your rankings through the year, I'll catalog your picks and tally up the top movies January 2009.

Please don't put a "placeholder" post if you don't actually plan on keeping up your list. Your placeholder posts will disappear / be deleted. Don't believe me? Ask fellow member Joseph Molotov: "Damn you guys for deleting me off the front page last year for not updating my list enough!"

Enjoy!

Theatrical

There Will Be Blood (1/30) Incredible.

Iron Man Highly entertaining, the return of good super hero movies is here!
The Dark Knight Incredible, amazing, work of art, etc. etc. You've read it all. It is definitely a great film, but my only problem with it was Bale. His Batvoice was so embarrassing every time he talked, it even exaggerated his lisp (that's already bothered me). Joker, perfect. Dent, great, but I wish he became twoface a little bit earlier in the film. Good job Nolan.
Wanted This may not be this high on my list the more I watch it, but I didn't have a single complaint about this as I watched it. Just a flat out over-the-top action flick.

Rambo I didn't think Stallone could pull this off, but he did. I laughed a lot at things I shouldn't have been laughing at though.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall Hilarious movie, 2nd best Apatow movie so far (superbad being 1st place)
Hellboy II: The Golden Army The visuals in this movie are incredible. Del Toro may be my favorite director soon if he continues his roll of films.

What Happens In Vegas For some reason I am a sucker for Ashton Kutcher movies. Pretty embarrassing, but I laughed alot at this movie. His best friend/lawyer, he pretty much made the movie for me.

Cloverfield (1/18) It was a fun rollercoaster, but as I thought of it I didn't like it. Go watch The Mist and enjoy a better film.

Drillbit Taylor Pretty much just a weaker PG-13 version of Superbad, except with Owen Wilson. I hope Mr. Apatow doesn't start recycling his scripts.

Fools Gold (2/08) Absolute garbage. I was tricked into seeing it by my siblings. Damn you!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull After the initial excitement of seeing ol' Indy on screen for about 5 minutes... I realized that he should've stayed off screen. He didn't have the same energy or wit as he used to. I couldn't find a single piece of this movie that I liked, and I wanted to so bad. Good job Spielberg/Lucas on ruining another great franchise.
You Don't Mess With The Zohan The first movie I've ever walked out on! Congratulations! I wasted an hour+ watching this garbage. Sandler is losing it.

1st Viewing on DVD

Aliens [1986] (1/02) First time I've seen this. Great action flick. I'm disappointed that I put this off for so long.
Dances With Wolves [1990] (1/17) Incredible movie. I haven't had a film bring so many smiles to my face than sitting through this one. Beautiful.
The King of Comedy [1983] So I finally bought this and Last Temptation to continue trying to finish my Scorsese collection, and this was great. I wonder why this movie isn't among his most highly acclaimed?
Death At A Funeral [2007] (2/11) Genius British comedy. Love it.

Kingdom of Heaven DC [2005] (1/14) As everyone has said already, this was a leap over the theatrical edition.
The Sting [1973] (1/17) Newman and Redford put on a great show. A classic.
The King of Kong [2007] (1/19) I've been reading that they manipulated the footage to make the villian (whos supposedly a decent guy) out to be a complete douche (which he definately seems like one). But even so, they did a great job.
Monty Python's Life of Brian [1979] (1/31) Another classic from the python crew.
Patriot Act: A Jeffrey Ross home movie [2005] (2/21)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford [2007] Beautiful movie, I'm glad it finally showed the true way Jesse James was, not an anti-hero but a demented fool.
Lars and the Real Girl [2007] Great movie, another movie thats advertised as a comedy but is more of a lighthearted drama. Superb acting from Ryan Gosling, should've been nominated.
Hellboy: Directors Cut [2004] I don't understand the mediocre reviews that this movie received. This was the first time I got to catch the Director's Cut, and it cleaned up a lot of the character development and back story on the villains. Can't wait till the sequel!

The Hunting Party [2007] (1/14) I was definately suprised by this one. I took home the movie with the "blockbuster exclusive" banner on the front, and usually thats a sure sign of "peice of crap". Great movie, very cool style.
Donnie Brasco [1997] (1/15) Pacino in one of his best. Depp.... overrated but OK. The movie is good, but I think if it had a different director it could've been alot better.
Boogie Nights [1997] (1/03) Probably my favorite of PT Andersons (haven't seen there will be blood yet). One of the only movies that actually made me feel uneasy during a scene (the firecracker scene).
Waitress [2007]
The Constant Gardener

High Fidelity [2000] (1/07) Overrated to an extent, but quite enjoyable.
Made [2001] (1/09) Waaaay better than Swingers, all I ever read is how terrible it is compared to it. This felt like an actual movie compared to it.
A League of Their Own [1992] (1/10) Chick flick, whatever. Jon Lovitz and Tom Hanks are hilarious.
Storytelling [2001] (1/20) I would've given this a better rating if it left out the fiction story. The story about the family was good but that first half took away from the movie.
Mureal's Wedding [1994] (1/21)
The Kingdom [2007] (1/21) Very awesome action sequences, but story is a bit weak.
The Last Temptaion of Christ [1988] As a film, it was interesting. Interesting concept, but honestly they should've studied the jewish culture a bit more before they made a film about it.
Michael Clayton [2007] I really don't understand why there was such praise for this movie.
The Bucket List [2008]Sure, cliche, but man I can't pass up a feel good movie. Nicholson is awesome as always.

Right At Your Door [2007] (1/15) The acting and atmosphere was superb. The ending, weak.
We Own The Night [2007]
Sicko [2007] (2/08) Entertainment wise? Very. My only complaint is that he never shows both sides of the story, yes universal health care could be good if it was done right, but its not going to be by th US. Maybe if they get rid of the IRS and replace the load of money they're taking from us and using that for healthcare would be better... who knows!
Delirious [2007] (2/21) Pretty good little movie... average, but I still enjoyed it. Worth a rent!
The Brave One [2007]Your typical revenge movie, nothing special here.
Atonement [2007] I can appreciate a good romance movie, but this was an average plot with an odd editing style. Then again, I despise Keira Knightly, so I might be "biased"
Jumper [2008] A perfect example of mediocrity if I've ever seen one. Hayden Christenson really needs to stop the acting business. He claimed he was going to be an architect after episode III but lied and is still pushing this crap on us.
The Grand [2008]Pretty decent movie overall, the cast really makes it what it is. David Cross ftw!
The Brood I really wish this didn't have such an obscure ending. Cronenberg did a great job as a build up but maaan was that cheesy.

Palindromes [2004] (1/21) Todd Solondz needs to get away from pedophilia. I know he tries to get as dark as possible, but gosh.
The Nines [2007] (1/18) Tries really hard to be a mind f*** movie, but fails with a stupid outcome.
Romance & Cigarettes [2005] Interesting, but not interesting enough. It had me for the first half hour but it didn't go anywhere new after that, just kept on with the same story without bringing anything interesting in.

Cruising [1980] (1/17) I read great reviews, and horrible reviews. I agree with the horrible reviews. Lots of talent behind it but this falls flat.
Diary of the Dead [2007]Could've been good, had a great concept, but everything failed miserably. A clown zombie? It tried so hard, but just barely pushed itself by. If Romero didn't direct, this could've been a classic, but him being the egotistical prick that he is just crapped out another zombie movie.

Across The UniverseWhat the hell was this? The songs didn't have anything to do with anything that was going on. Not to mention how bad the vocals are. Horrible waste of my time.
Awake [2008] I tried to avoid this one, but after I kept hearing about how great this was from my customers at work i tried it out. Should have gone with my instinct.
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay I didn't like the original, so I'm probably a bit biased. The only funny part (again) was good ol' Doogie.

Margot At The Wedding [2007] (2/11) Well, I hated "The Squid and the Whale", but my friend said he liked it better than it. Once again, another mindless "the world sucks, and lets have some masturbation scenes" movie. Jack Black made me.. kind of laugh, but I really don't understand why this was reviewed and advertised as a comedy.

Funny Games [2008].5 stars goto Naomi Watts being my lady. Awful movie.

The Comebacks[2007] I'm glad this movie flopped, now for the Epic/date/meet the spartans people to flop.
Last House on the Left [1972] (2/02)The original torture rape movie, horray. Did Randy Newman score this?
AVP: Requiem [2007] Possibly the worst movie I've seen of 2007. Absolutely terrible. There was not a single aspect of it to be liked. There could've been some decent gore, but it was so overly CGI that it just added a few sprinkles of poo on top of the turd. I had no idea they could've made it worse than the original.
