Jennifer Lopez as an Actress

I guess J.Lo's very name brings out moans and groans of 'whatever', but hey, I do think shes a MUCH better actress than a singer.

The other night I was watching 'U Turn' and even though Sean Penn is the lead actor, I found her stealing every scene she was in, bettering Sean at every move. I hadn't really seen her like that.

Then yesterday I ran across 'Selena' on TV, which I had never seen before. Only caught the last half hour, but WHAT A PERFORMANCE. I mean, I never saw a picture of the real Selena, but I think Jennifer did a great ACTING job regardless..... I must get this one on DVD for sure.....

Any other movies of hers that you would recommend? Ones in which she actually acts as opposed to being pretty wallpaper....

I don't think she's a bad actress. "Out of Sight" was a damn fine movie. "Angel Eyes" and "The Cell" were okay.

I've never seen Selena. The only movie I have seen her in where she was good was Out Of Sight. And I still preferred Carla Gugino's portrayal over hers.

Don't get me started on her "singing".

Most of the good movies she's been in (such as Out of Sight) are good in spite of Lopez...not because of.

My favorite JLo movie is The Cell, I never saw Out of Sight, but The Cell is definately worth a rental.

She was great in Out of Sight and Selena. Nobody really stood out in The Cell but she was competent in that as well. Never saw U Turn.

She is usually tolerable, but she makes fluff these days, that stuff is easy to criticize.

Out of sight is an amazing film. She has great chemistry with Clooney in the trunk of the car.

You really need to catch all of Selena, it's a great movie.

Per Selena's dad, J. Lo did a great job of emulating Selena - the same moves, mannerisms, etc.

J-lo may be a decent actress but it seems to me other than Selena and 1 or 2 other films she tends to pick marginal projects. She needs to start picking more films that can be critically successful and commercially successful. Otherwise people will just write her off as a crap actress and skip her films. When this happens even her stellar performances will be overshadowed.

I mean look what she did to Ben Affleck's career....

There was a HUGE stink in the Mexican-American community when Jennifer Lopez was cast as Selena. Jennifer Lopez is Puerto Rican. After the movie came out, no one was complaining as Lopez basically channeled Selena.

I remember seeing her in Mi Familia and thinking she was easy on the eyes and not a bad actress. She was very good in U-Turn and Out of Sight. I think she has chosen her projects very poorly since then however.

I think she used to be a pretty good actress, but now with her inflated ego and terrible role choices I don't have interest in what she does. I thought she was great in Out of Sight, but part of that thinking could just be because that was a great movie. She was ok in The Cell, but that wasn't that great of a film to begin with, visually amazing as it is. I haven't watched U-Turn yet, but I expect I'll enjoy her performance from what I hear.

Her problem was overexposure. You couldn't go a day without hearing about her from 2000 - 2004/5ish.

It happens to everyone thats overexposed, they get scrutinized for every little thing.
