It's always been Oh, Brother to me. Oddly enough, I was thinking about this very topic just a few days ago. I don't know why, but I saw that little something extra in him as an actor in Oh, Brother.

Goof Night and Good Luck is my favorite movie of his. But I think He established himself with Three kings. Then made it really bug with Oh Brother.

I’m going old school & I’ll say Roseanne legitimized him as a star.
J/K, he was pretty rough in the first season (his only, made a guest appearance later in the series) on Roseanne & he didn’t really impress me until ER. I think ER legitimized him an exceptionally good actor & I still think that he put on the best performance in the first five seasons of ER. Although, I did find Anthony Edwards’s performance a tad more impressive than Clooney’s & I thought Dr. Greene was a more emotionally powerful, more complete character, than Dr. Ross.
In terms of his film career, The Perfect Storm & O Brother, Where Art Thou? Were the first two movies that legitimized his film career. Ocean’s Eleven just reaffirmed that he’s a legitimate film star.
Some of Clooney’s newer projects have been hit or miss. I mean, he’s been good in all of them but him, Matt Damon & Mr. Pitt are getting way to political for my tastes & I’m starting (besides the Ocean’s series) to worry that we’ll never see Clooney in fun films like, O Brother, Where Art Thou? again.
Good Night, and Good Luck is my favorite (newer) Clooney movie & it was a subject that I had a lot of interest in & I was so pleased at the out come of the film. I’m still not really sure if I like Syriana or not.
Looking forward too seeing, Burning After Reading & White Jazz.

I love Out Of Sight, but don't forget the movie tanked when it came out and it had still been only a year since Crapman & Robin.
Three Kings on the other hand was a box office hit, a critical favorite, and 2 1/2 years removed from Crapman. That's the movie that legitimized his film career.
The Perfect Storm, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and Ocean's 11 legitimized his box office power(we'll overlook the Solaris tankjob).
And yes, one cannot ignore how his anti-Bush/GOP rantings have made him beloved within the Hollywood community. That had just as much to do with his Oscar nominations and victory last year as did the actual writing/directing/acting.

I think he's turned in some great performances and did a real good directing job in Good night and good luck but I don't think he has the acting chops worthy of an Oscar.

George Clooney is not a great actor. I like some of his movies and he seems to be a likable guy and but he's pretty average in terms of acting talent.
That said, he is unquestionably a superstar and I happen to agree with a lot of his political viewpoints ... I just wish he was a better actor.

"Batman & Robin" tanked, but Clooney made a fortune on the merchandising. I remember reading an interview where he said that's when his accountant told him he never had to take a movie for the money ever again, so he started using his name recognition to get movies made that he was enthusiastic about. Not long after that he made "Out of Sight." It may not have been a box office success, but it got great reviews and made a lot of people start thinking differently about what Clooney was capable of.
So, my vote is for "Out of Sight."

I'd say it was a toss-up between OOS and TK. I seem to remember alot of praise going around Out Of Sight. I know Three Kings was very well received.
For me personally, I've always dug him. Liked him on ER and loved (and somewhat surprised at) his performance in From Dusk Till Dawn. That movie pretty much cemented me as a big fan of his. He's a throwback. He's old Hollywood.

You know, I wish The Peacemaker got a little more respect. I'm the only person I know who likes that movie 
It has the single-best action movie "thing" I've ever seen: after a big car chase, the bad guys car is wrecked. Instead of driving away from them, Clooney gets out of his car, walks over and shoots the bad guys. It's the calm, cold way he does it that really strikes me.
I just enjoy the hell out of that flick, but to answer the OP, I think it was Out of Sight as well. Not only was it a great flick, but he was the epitome of "cool".

Of course I've read that Clooney re-evaluated his movie choices after the Batman and Robin fiasco, and you could argue that Batman and Robin really changed him to what he is today through its failures.
