Good luck finding the Japanese version of Macross. The Animeigo and ADV DVDs are OOP and super expensive on the aftermarket, and apparently some legal issues mean that a future US release is unlikely.

Re: Robotech - news, rumors, castings..
I paid the premium for the initial Animeigo release but I picked up an additional set on sale ($39.99!) due to slight cracks that developed on the disc hubs when played. I'm glad I have not opened the additional set.

Here's Variety's story on the Robotech remake:
http://variety.com/2015/film/news/ro...t-list-wrapper
Read the comments, they're way more interesting. Some people with actual knowledge vs. raving fanboys/fangirls. The comments make a key point that the article doesn't. Apparently, Studio Nue holds the rights to all the Macross designs and characters and Sony made no deal with them, only with Harmony Gold, which does NOT have those rights. So any movie arising out of all this will have to have all new designs or designs based on whichever series Harmony Gold actually has the rights to. (One commenter seems to think it's "Mospeada," the second series used to create Robotech.) But they can't use Lisa Hayes, Rick Hunter, or Lynn Minmei. Or the main Macross ship design. That's at least my understanding so far.
Still, it's nice to see Harmony Gold getting a payday out of all this so many years later. Even if nothing comes of it.

I haven't read the article/comments, but why can't they use Lisa, Rick, etc? When they branched off and did their own thing with Robotech:Sentinels, they still used Rick Hunter, but obviously changed from the Studio Nue designs. I think Shadow Chronicles had modified alphas from mospeada.
But yeah, I think most people still consider the Macross saga as "Robotech" (and Southern Cross as an abomination), so Sony should have just licensed Macross and then made a deal with Harmony Gold for domestic distribution rights or something.

‘Furious 7′ Director James Wan in Talks for ‘Robotech’

Sony Pictures is in early talks with “Furious 7″ director James Wan to helm its live-action “Robotech” feature film.
The talks are taking place a month after Sony acquired rights to the project and set it up with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton producing and Michael Gordon (“300,” “G.I. Joe”) writing the script. The series on which it’s based is centered on humanity’s use of robot technology to fend off alien invaders.
“Robotech” derives from a series of popular Japanese TV shows that made their way over to the United States in the ’80s. The rights to the material had originally been at Warner Bros. with Tobey Maguire and Akiva Goldsman on board as producers.
Prior to “Furious 7,” Wan co-created the lucrative “Saw” and “Insidious” franchises along with directing the surprise hit “The Conjuring.” He’s producing “Insidious 3″ and returning to direct “The Conjuring 2” for New Line in the fall.
Wan is repped by Paradigm. News about the “Robotech” talks was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

'It' Director Andy Muschietti to Tackle 'Robotech' for Sony (Exclusive)
Sony’s Robotech is getting It status.
Andy Muschietti, who directed the upcoming film version of Stephen King’s It, has been tapped to develop and direct the studio’s adaptation of the anime featuring giant armored warriors.
Muschietti's creative partner Barbara Muschietti will join Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton in producing the project, which is based on 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Japan's Tatsunoko Productions. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.
Robotech is a sprawling sci-fi epic that takes place in a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology of an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. The technology comes in handy when the humankind has to fend off a wave of alien invasions.
Hollywood has been trying to bring the mechas to the big-screen for over a decade with Sony picking up the rights in 2015. Sony previously courted James Wan to direct the potential franchise before the filmmaker committed to Aquaman.
The project has no writer but the studio expects to work with the Muschietti siblings to find someone to execute Andy Muschietti's filmmaker. The project is a high priority for the studio and it is moving quickly.
Sanford Panitch and Matthew Milam are overseeing for Columbia. David Hopwood is shepherding for Canton while Shannon Gaulding runs point for Hollywood Gang.
Muschietti got his start in horror – he made his English-language debut with the surprise hit Mama – and is awaiting the September release of It from New Line. The movie's trailer scored one of the largest views ever in a 24-hour period, with pre-release interest at stratospheric levels. The same applies to Hollywood interest in Muschietti, who looks with It to have pulled off the difficult task adapting one of King’s classics.
The filmmaker recently came on board to direct the pilot for Hulu’s television series adaptation of the Joe Hill comic book, Locke and Key.
Muschietti is repped by WME.

So CGI is at the point where this can be down and look good, but will they do the diverse cast?

Re: Robotech - news, rumors, castings..
EXCLUSIVE: After helping steer the ship as the main director on Marvel’s Hawkeye series, Rhys Thomas has been set to direct Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari’s Robotech for Sony Pictures. The film is currently in development with the script by Marcum & Holloway, with a rewrite by Gatewood & Tanaka. Harmony Gold is also involved.
Based on the popular 80s anime TV series, story of Robotech is set in a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology of an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island and is now using that technology to fight off an impending alien invasion.
Thomas is flying high right now after directing and executive producing the Disney+ Marvel series, Hawkeye, with Jeremy Renner reprising his Avenger role. Thomas is also highly regarded in the comedy world for his work on Saturday Night Live and the Emmy-nominated and critically-acclaimed IFC series Documentary Now!, which he co-created with Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Seth Meyers, and directed. For Documentary Now!, Thomas received four Emmy nominations and he is currently in production on Season 4.
Gatewood & Tanaka’s feature Sharper sold in a bidding war to Apple and A24 with Julianne Moore attached to star. Ben Curon directed the film, now in post-production, co-starring Sebastian Stan. Gatewood & Tanaka are currently writing Untitled Asian American Heist Project for Amazon. Canton/Nunnari Productions producing credits include 300 and Immortals, and most currently Canton is an executive producer of the Power universe series.
Thomas is represented by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham. Gatewood and Tanaka are repped by UTA, Management 360, Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman, LLP
