Yeah but not too fucked up that makes it genericish (it could be but...it's interesting for sure) like the modern horror style we're used to..you know...the mediocre kind.

Looks okay at best. For some reason it reminds me of May and Teeth.

Re: The Loved Ones
So, my wife and I watched this last night. We bought the region B Blu-ray from amazon.co.uk.
It was... messed up. I guess you could call it torture porn... but it's still nothing like Saw or Hostel. I really liked the music in it. The "Lola" girl was excellent. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a horror flick to watch.

Re: The Loved Ones
It's a decent enough watch but nothing great. I had heard pretty good things about it so my hopes were up but it didn't live up to that. It's a lot better than what's out there in the genre but it's still pretty standard.

I enjoyed the film for what it was. The female lead was great in it and like many more recent Australian films - it's nicely shot and really gives off a great feel.

Re: The Loved Ones
I found Xavier Samuel's acting to be pretty horrible, but Lola and her father are creepy as hell. Definitely worth picking up if you can play Region 2 DVD or Region B Blu-ray.

It's not getting a theatrical release per say. At least, not yet.
Paramount picked up the rights to this awhile ago, but will be distributing it under their Insurge label. Paramount was on the fence on giving it a wide release based upon the backlash The Devil Inside received within hours of its first public screenings. Instead, they've partnered with Tugg to see if they can gain interest within markets to give it a theatrical release.
There's six "pending" screenings that have been put up on the website, all for Thursday, May 31st (technically Friday, June 1st) at midnight:
New York, NY at IFC Center Pending
Austin, TX at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar
Houston, TX at Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park
Chicago, IL at AMC River East 21 Pending
San Francisco, CA at AMC Metreon 16 Pending
Los Angeles, CA at New Beverly Cinema
... and they're not selling too hot. The New Beverly Cinema screening has the most confirmed with a whopping 52 seats sold. The rest are all under an amazing 20 seats. If Tugg is the way distribution will go, well, I doubt that based upon those early numbers.
It's good to see Paramount taking a chance on another option when it comes to distribution a la the first Paranormal Activity which saw a wide release within four-to-six weeks of its debut. However, it'll be interesting to see if the flick even makes it on more than these six. I requested a screening come to Vegas, but I'll let you know how that goes.

Re: The Loved Ones
Why did Jamie Rich here at DVD Talk review this? Even if another reviewer here gave it the same rating.....so be it, that's fine but JR has no interest in this type of horror so why even go forth with the review? Also, why does there have to be a point behind what a psycho does? How about maybe review the film from the perspective of the psychos and how far they go instead of just giving up on those points in your review? I really think his review should be taken down.
I saw this last night and was quite surprised at how good it was. It's no masterpiece by any means but I was seriously just expecting one or two sick moments but it remained very tense throughout. There were more than a couple of things that seemed out of place (the music for one) and the whole sub-plot didn't pay off and really wasn't needed (although looking back I think it was there to ease the intensity and to be honest...it [sub-plot] did have its moments).
I probably wouldn't watch it again but it is definitely worth checking out.

I've been looking forward to this since the Fango article about it. I'm gonna hold off on it and save it until the horror challenge starts next month.

Re: The Loved Ones
Caught this the other night based off a glowing recommendation and really liked it a lot. Totally fucked up - like Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Pretty In Pink. I thought all the actors did a fine job, especially Lola and her father. I like that they showed you very scary glimpses into her and her father's twisted world, but they never get into exposition mode and explain the shit out of it. And the torture... I'm a pretty desensitized guy and that had my stomach in knots even after it was through.
Not sure how this went unseen by me for so long, but I ordered the region B blu-ray right up.
