Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

It was nice seeing Sigourney Weaver at the Comic-Con panel....along with 27 minutes of footage. And the 3-D glasses were the coolest one I've seen.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

So, what are the home video implications of this film? Is this a 3-D only movie or will it play just as well on 2-D? Seems like an awful lot of money to spend on a film that will do shit sales on DVD...

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

It will play in 2D as well and Cameron is framing it differently (2.35:1 for 2D, 1.78:1/1.85:1 for 3D).

The footage looked bloody fantastic. I cannot wait to see the whole film. It really looks like another leap forward for Cameron.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

Of course it's gonna look fantastic--after all these years and all this expense and all this "anticipation," that's the least of it. But so what? What's the friggin' thing about? What's the content like? Is there a story we can follow or characters we can care about? Or is it going to fall dramatically inert on the screen--like THE ABYSS?

The Abyss was great, at least up until they brought in the aliens.

How was the CGI? Is it going to change the movie world forever? How did the CGI compare to the Transformers, Davy Jones, King Kong, and all those other CGI heavy movies.

Davy Jones was entirely done with CGI? Pretty impressive for that time period, I must say!

I wouldn't say it'll change the world but the performance capture (Cameron does not like the term "motion capture) was pretty darn good.

An amusing anecdote came out of the James Cameron/Peter Jackson panel. Jackson wanted some CG work done on "District 9" at Weta but Cameron had all their resources tied up with "Avatar".

Better then Transfomers? (the other GGI heavy film of 2009)

Nice words about Sigourney Weaver's personal appearance and the 3-D glasses, but not a word about what's in the footage. Not encouraging.

And I haven't seen anything in the press about the footage either. Nobody seems to care enough to write about it, at least in the major media outlets.

This doesn't bode well, folks.

Interesting that Cameron didn't use ILM, as he has done in the past.

I wonder if Cameron rambled on and on and on and on like he did at E3. Either way, excited about the project.

The last time Jim Cameron and his potential for success was underestimated, well you know...

Well, ILM is putting out some perfect looking stuff. But WETA seems to definately be the 'progressive' folks right now. Check out the old Bad Taste documentry on the DVD. It's kind of funny to see Peter Jackson, in his garage, showing some props and effects stuff that he built.

I'll see Avatar in December (multiple times, I expect) either way. But, seriously, could I just please see a minute or two? Please?

The 'free 15min' thing sounds cool. But I really doubt I'll have the time to stop and check it out. If someone threw it on before or after a feature film (any general action/adventure), I'd see the movie, regardless of what it is.

Just do some online trailers or something. I feel like Cameron and Co is a bit 'self aware' how unpredictable online 'buzz' can be. Since there's so much invested, I think he just wants to advertise to the people who get out and see movies, instead of the people that just talk about them online.

I can kind of feeling what he's up to. It definately feels experimental. We're so used to getting excited about a project and then getting flooded with trailers and footage and buzz. And that being said, fuck it, I think I don't want to see anything else about this movie and just go see it opening day. It's only five months away.

It's certainly interesting to see what he's up to.

I'd like to at least be introduced to the characters and have a feel for the film before I go to the theater in December.

It's only July, calm down.

It's more than enough that Cameron is going to supply fifteen minutes to us come next month in 3D and IMAX-3D and I'm sure they'll be a trailer coming sooner rather than later (probably in August when the merchandise starts to be released).

Cameron can do no wrong in my book. I may not be a big fan of Titanic; but the man has a consistent record (Terminator, Aliens, Abyss, T2, True Lies).

I heard somewhere that the trailer will also be released on Augest 21. I do hope however, even though this is thinking to far ahead, that he will give us the option to watch the film in 2D when it is released on Blu Ray. That is where he can do wrong in my book. But I don't know if he actually has the power to decided that, it's probably up to the studios. For the Blu release I'd like to see the movie in it's original aspect ratio (1:85) in 2D. But I'm sure a 3D version will be released (much like Coraline) also which is fine by me. If this is a good movie, I just don't want to see the home release fucked up.

But that's not what is going to put asses in seats. I know how much he's pushed the technological envelope with his films. But the fact is that not everyone can notice or appreciate this.... certainly not John Q Public. And while the footage is awesome, do you think it's enough to carry the movie? Because I think people will compare this to scenes from Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. It's nothing new other than it's now in 3D. Cameron said in the EW panel that it's firstly about story and characters, but it seems like they are a backdrop to perfecting performance capture and photo-real environments and characters.

I can't judge the quality of the story or the characters until I see the film.

Titanic is far from awful. I never thought a movie about Titanic could keep me glued to the seat for 3 hours. Watching it now, it's a bit dated but still good.
