Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

If Cameron wanted to (re)make Thunder Cats, he should have just bought its rights. This looks horrible, worst character design since Jar Jar Binks.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

As I mentioned in the Comic-Con thread, I thought the scenes they showed were pretty good but not the greatest thing since sliced bread. The merging of live-action and CGI is pretty damn good, though. I think once the movie gets going, you'll think less about the short-comings and more about the world he's created.

This is definitely a movie to see on the big screen.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

I didn't know James Cameron was making Halo.

Seriously though, I think it looks good, and while some of the CGI looks obvious, it's only because we have no idea what any of this stuff would look like. The worlds look solid, and I have to say I am glad Cameron decided to build upon some of the stuff he started in Aliens. I'll definitely be seeing this one in the theater, IMAX 3d is a must. However, when I mentioned the kind of weird ass sci-fi stuff you only read about in books that mainstream audiences would reject, this is exactly the kind of stuff I had in mind.

That's what happens when you start up the hype machine years in advance. For me, the problem is that it looks inconsistent; as others have said, in some shots the CGI is impressive and in other shots it looks like they need to do more work (especially in the last 20 seconds or so). When you're selling your movie primarily on the basis that the effects are going to be groundbreaking and completely alter the way we look at movies, that is not the reaction you want to hear.

Still, I am reminding myself that this is not the way Cameron wants us to see the movie, and when it comes out in 3D, I could have a completely different reaction. And the battle scenes look like a lot of fun, quasi-impressive CGI or not.

Does anybody know if the trailer music was taken from? Some really great, driving stuff there.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

Okay, I can get the HD trailer to play directly from the site, but whenever I click the one available on Itunes that I allegedly downloaded, it doesn't want to work. Do I need to upgrade something?

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

As per the trailer:

When the CGI is placed within the real world, it looks top notch (the Avatars just waking up on the hospital beds).

When the real world is placed within the CGI, not as much.

Cameron and company still have three months left of post, so there can be some improvements that can be done during that time.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

A local digital theater showed the new trailer before District 9 this evening. It definitely plays out a bit better on the big screen (the sound for the teaser is amazing). The theater guy told me that they were also sent a 3D copy since they are a 3D capable theater.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

I becoming less hyped about this movie the more I actually see of the characters and settings. Unless the story really delivers and plays better than it looks in Screencaps then I'll be underwhelmed.

I felt that way even before seeing the trailer. Unless the 3-D experience of watching it is truly something to behold, I really think this could be one of the all time bombs financially.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

Just watched the trailer a couple times in 720p. Dunno what some people are complaining about the CGI looking lackluster. Everything seemed to click pretty well to me. I have a feeling seeing this on an IMAX screen in 3D will be visually spectacular, though I wonder if they developed some new 3D tech just for this film?

Yeah, people are pretty picky. I think it looks amazing and I can't wait to catch some more cliips in IMAX 3D tomorrow night.

^ Ditto, same here. I'm wondering if there'll be long line-ups tomorrow to get good seats ... Hopefully not, I mean, it's only 16 minutes of footage ... people aren't that crazy, are they? Are they??

Wow, I remember an awful lot of people saying the same thing about "Titanic" before it opened...

Interesting trailer. Piqued my interest which is all it's supposed to do at this point.

Picky? Hard not to be when this thing has been described as the NEXT BIG THING for years, and then a trailer looking nothing more than decent pops up...

Only way I will watch AVATAR is if I can get 1000gs in the first 2 minutes and then turn it off.
Personally I have never really liked any of the man's films.

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

I had absolutely no idea what this movie was about until recently. I kept on getting it confused with that M. Knight Shyamalan disaster, hehe. But I saw the trailer today, and I think the CGI looks amazing! I can't wait to see the full film in 3d

Re: James Cameron's Avatar - news, rumors, castings..

I liked it. I do agree with everyone on how the aliens (na'vi?) look a little cartoon-ish. But that could change, especially with the screening that people are anticipating, they could voice out their opinion and hopefully with that they could change it to a more realistic look.

Not really quite as impressive as I'd thought it would be. I'll see this movie, no doubt, but I'm a little underwhelmed from that preview.

Avatar looks like cartoon clips during some RPG video game. Those mech suits are so cartoony after seeing it done right in District 9.
