Y: The Last Man - news, rumors, castings

New Line lines up donors for 'Y' adaptation
By Borys Kit
July 24, 2007

D.J. Caruso and Carl Ellsworth, the team behind the hit thriller "Disturbia," are reteaming for "Y: The Last Man," New Line Cinema's adaptation of the acclaimed Vertigo comic book. J.C. Spink, Chris Bender and David Goyer are producing.

Caruso is developing and directing, with Ellsworth on board to write.

The comic, created by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, centers on Yorick, an escape artist who is the last survivor of a mysterious plague that has killed every single male mammal in the world. With his male pet monkey, he sets out to find what might have wiped out the world's male chromosomes.

Mason Novick is exec producing.

Caruso and Ellsworth became hot properties with "Disturbia," the teen-skewing "Rear Window"-like thriller made for $20 million that has grossed about $80 million.

Caruso, who also directed "The Salton Sea" and "Two for the Money," is repped by CAA and attorney John LaViolette.

Ellsworth began his Hollywood career working on Joss Whedon's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and then going on to "Cleopatra 2525," on which he worked with Sam Raimi. He entered the feature world with the DreamWorks hit "Red Eye," on which he first teamed with producers Spink, Bender and Novick. Ellsworth is repped by ICM and Shuman Co. and attorney Karl Austen.

I love 'Y', but haven't seen any of the movies referenced in the article so I can't tell if this is good news or bad. Like with anything else I like that gets the big screen treatment, I just hope its good. Its a great premise and I love the way its written. Hopefully they can do right by it.

They already screwed up the premise. Yorick doesn't give a crap about finding out what happened to all the males. He just wants to be reunited with his girlfriend on the other side of the world.

Wish they would have just got Vaughn to write it...

Okay, spoiler regarding the cause for people who haven't read the book:

Spoiler:
There is no way, at all, that they'll ever include the whole morphogenetic field nonsense if there's a movie. Even comic fans went "buh-what?" at that explanation.

Hopefully that was just for the sake of brevity in the article. That would take a lot away from his character if he becomes someone hellbent on finding answers.

Looks like Shia's Out

Commentors brought up Anton Yelchin (perhaps in a few years), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (sounds intriguing), Emile Hirsch (perhaps) and Ryan Reynolds (10 years too old, IMO) as possible replacements for Yorick. I think I'd rather see an unknown actor as Yorick, but maybe that's just me.

I'd be okay with any of those choices. Anything is better than Shia.

But at the same time, like the article said, Shia gave it instant star power, and more likely to get made. Hopefully this doesn't stall things.

Spoiler:
Actually the whole point of the series was different... a total misdirection... which hopefully will make it into the movie

Wow... I always thought that was probably the best the series could have given us. And to paraphrase the comic... would any answer have been satisfactory?
