There has definitely been some WTF film news lately and this is right up there with the nuttiest and out there news. This is the 2nd time I have had to just say "OK; am I 100% sure its not April fool's Day"?.
I love Herzog and Cage is great with the right material so I have faith in this even though I dont know if this needs to be made.

"Nicolas Cage will star in an updated version of 1992's The Bad Lieutenant with Werner Herzog directing, Edward R. Pressman producing and Avi Lerner's Nu Image/Millenium Films financing, reports Variety.

The original film, also produced by Pressman, starred Harvey Keitel and was directed by Abel Ferrara from a screenplay by Ferrara and Zoe Lund. That film received an NC-17 rating with the depraved title character heavily involved in drugs, gambling, sex and stealing while a New York police officer.

The new script's written by Billy Finkelstein, a TV writer with credits on "Murder One," "Law & Order" and "NYPD Blue."

Production will start in late summer."

with a master like Herzog, one of the few true masters of cinema living, at the helm i will see it no doubt...

Cage is so/so really, he made it on his family name that he superficially tried to pretend he didn't use, and that everyone in the business didn't know...

but he has done very good work in a couple of films... i did like 'Lord Of War'... also 'Leaving Las Vegas', where his odd quirkiness filled out the role so well... maybe 'Bringing Out The Dead', but i think a better actor could have done more with that...

but based on Herzog alone i think this could be really good...

I've always thought Bad Lieutenant would be better if the Lieutenant didn't have sideburns.

I actually just bought Bad Lieutenant today and was intending on watching it later tonight. Though I haven't seen it yet, I'm sure I'll like it.

Anyway on topic, I like Herzog and Cage so I'm optimistic about this.

It's at times like this when I wish Kinski was still alive (and younger if he was). Now a Herzog/Kinski BAD LIEUTENANT would be a must see film!

I'm sorry. This one goes into the "No need to do a remake" pile for me. Yes, I agree Herzog is a genius, but this movie doesn't need a remake. Keitel smoking crack and dancing a naked jig in the kitchen was and will always be The Bad Lieutenant.

Election, Stop-Loss and Hustle and Flow, which are mature, adult works, a pair of excellent documentaries (Tupac: Ressurection, Murderball), The Foot Fist Way, a comedy which has gained many positive reviews (and sees limited release later this month), plus a bunch of films that are geared towards teens but are better than one would normally expect, sometimes far better (Better Luck Tomorrow, the two Jackass films, Save the Last Dance, Orange County, Blades of Glory).

Though I'm not sure why somebody would be concerned over the production company; damn near every one has had its fair share of crap. All I needed to read was the name "Werner Herzog" and I was sold.

You also forgot to mention my other line about all production companies being associated with crap films from time to time. So I'll ask again: why are you so concerned about this particular company?

MTV films dont have anything to do this film. At least Im pretty sure they dont. Thats just there cause the posters are from the Mtv website.

You're right. It's being produced by Edward R. Pressman Films which made a few good indie movies early in their history (Good Morning Babylon, Homicide and American Psycho) but most of their other releases are schlock.

In 2006 they apparently remade DePalma's Sisters. Has anyone actually seen it? IMDb users gave it a 4.4.

I'm a huge Herzog fan but this is bizarre news to say the least. BL hardly needs to be remade especially with Nic Cage.

Just remember Herzog did a pretty good job with another remake 30 years ago with Nosferatu.
