Howard the Duck theatrical Screening in Los Angeles
The New Beverly Theater in Los Angeles, also known as my second home, is showing a double bill of Gremlins and Howard the Duck July 22 and 23.
Link:http://www.newbevcinema.com/calendar.cfm Since there are so many fans of this film awaiting a DVD, I figured I would share. I go to this theater almost every week. They show actual film prints on loan from the local movie studios. They're generally pretty good quality prints too. it's not the greatest sound system in the world, but generally adequate for what they show. There's a lot of other great stuff for buffs over the next two months too... Kurosawa, Kubrick, Lynch, the Coens, John Carpenter, the original Japanese language uncut Godzilla... you name it. I'm going to be there every damn night it seems.

I used to go to the New Beverly all the time, but have stopped lately. This may make me go back.

George Lucas is spinning in his grave. Oh, and has Lucasfilm all but declared this movie will never see the light of day on DVD? Sure it's a piece of crap, but you know there are quite a few people who would pick it up. It has Anchor Bay(or Starz) written all over it.

If I was in LA, I'd seriously go see it.

I would to Joe. I used to love the film as a kid and saw it a million times. Though I realised it was pretty stupid once I got into my late teens and tried to watch on TNT Monstervision and turned the channel.
But maybe the film works on a camp/guilty pleasure level, and you just have to not take it seriously at all. I'd be interested in seeing the entire film again,to see what I think of it. |

I'm definitely going, but I haven't seen the movie in years. I'm prety sure it will be one of those things where the memory of the movie is actually better than the movie itself, and I'll wonder why the hell I bothered to go in the first place. But at least Gremlins won't make it a wasted trip.

Well, I had intended to see Howard the Duck, but on THE VERY DAY it was supposed to debut, the owner of the theater died and they cancelled all screenings and closed the theater until further notice. I didn't know it had happened until I went to the theater Monday night and found it closed with a note on the door.
The article on their website says his death was "sudden and completely unexpected." Looks like George Lucas's hitmen have once again prevented the public from gaining access to Howard the Duck. http://www.newbevcinema.com/index.cfm Hopefully the family will continue to run the theater, because it would be a shame to see it close. And they are all very nice people.

This movie was just on one of those Encore channels last Saturday night. It seems the team of men Lucas hired to keep this movie hidden slipped.
Aside from watching Lea Thompson , I don't have any other reason to view this movie.

Everyone does remember that Lucas DIDN'T write or direct HOWARD THE DUCK, right? He was just Exec. Producer. It's kind of like blaming Spielberg for THE FLINTSTONES.

This movie gets so much crap and I don't know why. It's a fun goofy film that at the time there were plenty of.
I have a HDTV2DVD of this as well as the HD capture that I have watched a few times already in the past couple months! My kids love it as well just as I did back in the day. It's really sad that movies like this are not on DVD while other movies that are complete and utter crap have been released even twice. |

Wasn't this one of the first theatrical movies based on a Marvel Comic?

And I was unaware he had anything to do with "The Flintstones". I would give him points for being Exec. Producer for "Men in Black" but he also did that for "MiB2"....so those cancel each other out. I actually have no real ill towards Lucas for doing this movie, I was under the impression he did the movie just to test out animatronic technology or something. Anyway, exactly how faithful is this movie to the "Howard the Duck" comics?
