I’m curious about this, too. I’ve scoured the internets but can’t find anything other than references to this teaser. It supposedly ran before How the Grinch Stole Christmas way back in the year 2000, when the film was attached to Universal. Fast-forward many years and Universal dropped the movie and Warner Brothers picked it up.

I'll post it again, because it deserves repeating. I don't think the book is saying you can act like a brat without consequences. I think what it does is validate children's feelings while recognizing that they might be over-reacting. It also does a good job at getting them to embrace their imagination and adventurous side while making them realize that they need to appreciate their family and their home. For me the visuals in the book were just as, if not more, important as the words. The child was punished, but he realized his mom still loved him despite the fight.

She shouldn't have sent her child to bed with no dinner, that is just mean..
Sending a kid to bed without desert is much more appropriate
Remember folks, this book was banned when it originally came out in 1967.
While I'm sure there's a lot of "meaning" to this story that you're filling in the gaps, it just didn't do it for me in the same way. And while I do like Maurice Sendak's art, I thought his other books were a whole lot better. In The Night Kitchen was something I really enjoyed.. though I haven't read it in a long time, so maybe my opinion on it will change like WTWTA.
I mean, Maurice Sendak's books were a bit out there. They seem to have some serious undertones mixed in. His book Outside Over There is based around a surreal kidnapping, has undertones of child sexual abuse, and was turned into the movie Labyrinth. But Where The Wild Things Are just felt... like it rewards brats.
Guess it's just a matter of watching the film to see Spike Jonze run wild with his take on it. Because really, there's no way anyone can say the book was better in this situation.
