I don't care for the florid kitsch of his movies. Just not my thing.

Overrated my ass.
I just recently cracked open the Viva Pedro boxset that I purchased from Columbia House many years ago.
I had only seen half of the films in the set.
Now that I have seen the rest of the films in the set I have to post that Almodovar is one of the greatest directors working today.
After Buñuel he is the 2nd greatest Spanish director of all time.

Certainly in the top 10 working directors today, probably close to if not in the top 5.

Of course, if you're viewing is limited to Hollywood or North American film, I can see the attraction towards Scosese as he's better then the majority of directors producing films for that market.
Yes, because the only people who give high praise to Scorsese are those who limit themselves to Hollywood films.

I don't like Scorsese as much as a lot of people, and I watch more non-American films than American ones, but I still think it's pretty hard to deny that films like Raging Bull and Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy and Goodfellas are indeed great, and not just good.

Re: Anyone else think that Pedro Almodovar is overrated?

And in response to the OP - Almodovar is pretty great. I actually prefer his messier, "trashier" early films to his post-Live Flesh work - but I think he's made some fantastic films throughout his career. I didn't expect much from The Skin I Live In after the disappointing Broken Embraces and Volver, but I ended up really, really enjoying it. I love the melodrama and "florid kitsch" of a lot of his films.

I recently placed an Amazon UK order for all his films that don't have an in-print US release, and I'm excited to be able to complete his filmography.

Still the case.

But I've seen a lot of his films since. He's fantastic.
